  1. Charles Notice has nailed it... "The road goes nowhere and is the only place to drop people off." I've only ever had 2 tickets prior to this and I also appealed both successfully. I appealed these on the grounds that I did not leave the vehicle, the motor was running and the handbrake not applied so I was therefore not technically parked. I also flagged the whole 2min time window on each occasion and foolishly hoped for a bit of reasonable common sense. I finally pointed out other factors such as the elderly relative and not obstructing anyone. Going back to MarkE's where is the cut-off point, I honestly feel that 2 minutes is just RIDICULOUS! This is their own time-stamp, not me playing it down and claiming 15min as a "couple".
  2. MarkE - Ok, so there needs to be a cut-off and clearly defined rules, I do get that, but rules need to be framed by common sense. My opinion on it is largely irrelevant, but maybe 10min is reasonable? It's all about what is "reasonable" in my eyes. Again, the fine just seems high. My wife got a parking fine somewhere else and it was ?45. Is ?65 reasonable? I don't expect them to issue different values for different periods of offence. Jeremy - It isn't traffic wardens who issue these, it is a camera that picks it up and sends it out via post.
  3. Aggressive approach... as in, issuing tickets for a 2min drop-off where you are causing no obstruction, inconvenience or delay to anyone whatsoever.
  4. I have lived in East Dulwich for over 10 years now and during that time, have made fairly regular drop-offs and pick-ups at Peckham Rye station (Holly Grove round the back of McDonalds) for visiting friends / relatives without issue. In the past 2 months, I have had 2 PCNs issued for the most over-officious reasons that have left me fuming at Southwark Council. I have appealed unsuccessfully and now feel bullied into having to pay the ?65 (also seems excessive) rather than face the prospect of an independent adjudicator possibly ruling against me and that fee doubling. There seems to be no recourse on this and Southwark are way over-the-top aggression in their pursuing these. Has anyone else had a recent PCN for unreasonable grounds? My representations were roundly ignored and they essentially repeated the statement of my original offence, whilst ignoring all my counter points. My first charge was a drop-off, where I was stationary for 2 minutes (as specified on the PCN) in the large bay set back from the road by the red garages just past the pedestrian entrance to the station from Holly Grove. They accused me of being parked more than 50cm from the kerb and therefore obstructing traffic (I wasn't even close to obstructing anyone). The second charge, I pulled into the loading bay in order to pick up my in-laws and they accused me of being the wrong class of vehicle to stop here. Again, the duration was 2 minutes. I?m sure I?ll get some jolly troll telling me I ?shouldn?t have parked there?, but I have walked around the entire vicinity of Peckham Rye station and there seems to be nowhere permitted to drop off or pick up passengers within a few hundred yards. Hardly ideal if you are collecting elderly visitors from out of town. Anyway, just keen to know why they?ve suddenly become so aggressive on this (apart from the obvious money-grabbing incentive) and if anyone else has been stung by it.
  5. Just in case anyone else stumbles across this, I just found out they are open Saturdays 8am - 4pm. Closed Sundays. Not sure about weekdays so I hope nobody is looking for that!
  6. I know this isn't strictly ED, but I believe it's the closest scrapyard to us! I can't seem to find their opening hours online and there's no answer on their number so just thought I'd ask if anyone here happens to frequent the place and knows when it opens and closes?
  7. We used Pete Bennison (http://www.pmbennison.co.uk/Home/Services) for a Gas emergency a year or so back and would definitely recommend him. He was very friendly and knowledgeable and reasonably priced too. Looks like he does installations and plumbing as well as saving houses from exploding with a gas leak!
  8. Snow in London is as rare as an honest politician - I just don't get why so many people gripe and groan about it. It's one day a year if you're lucky - grab your thermals and go play!
  9. I rented for a year on Bawdale Rd before buying in Dulwich and found the place through Loot.com with a landlord advertising directly. I don't know if estate agencies would not charge those 'admin' fees etc. I was desperate to avoid that too and glad we did. Got lucky with a beautiful basement flat with a garden and a nice landlord for 866pcm. That was 4yrs back though so probably gone up a fair bit. Generally anywhere around Lordship Lane is good, but probably more expensive. Good luck!
  10. Fantastic news! I'm there with bells on. I spoke to the 2010 Barry Barry champ yesterday and the bear is safe and well on his Nunhead mantelpiece so will definitely make its way back home very before the race.
  11. In case anyone was worrying, I just got news from Greg that Barry is happy in his new (temporary) home. Remember that Greg - it's only temporary! Would look much better on my mantelpiece. Just as well I'm not bitter in the slightest.
  12. I think inviting Gregory "The Pocket Rocket" Wells was my last mistake. I'll never hear the end of this!
  13. I am barry (very) much barrying (looking) forward to the barry barry (barry barry) this barry (saturday) and have barryed (recruited) a good barry (number) of barrys (chumps/goons/retards) including none other than barry (barry) from Eastenders to barry (run) the barry barry (barry barry). Bring on the barry (barry), barry (SM barry J). BARRRRRRYYYYYYYY!
  14. Good golly gosh, I am moist with excitement and anticipation at the return of this event! I'll be there with the proverbial bells on and hope to rope in a few mates for a bit of added competition too. Non Dulwichites are allowed right? I may even try and bring a crowd of buxom wenches to cheer me on... and everyone who comes in after me too, but not those inconsiderate buggers (aka athletes) rolling in before!
  15. I had a great day out here and think you did a good job in recreating a village fete feel for the atmosphere, but were just a little shy on activities/events for adults and kids alike. Echoing some of the sentiments here, if you weren't into dogs, it would be a bit on the mundane side. Personally, whilst I love dogs, it seemed to be taken a bit too seriously by the judges too - it's not Crufts! Aside from the coconut shy, it was all stalls, shops and info-stands - try to get a few more games in like tombolas, pick-up-pegs and any other old games of skill and/or chance like Jeremy said. Still keep it small though - it seemed a lot cosier and more community-spirited than say the Irish Festival with the fairground beside it and the all day music... which I did enjoy (before I offend the Irish contingent!), but it's not a village fete.
  16. A saucer or pot of beer. Seriously! My mum used to put one out in the garden and they'd always slither off to their watery grave on the promise of free beer. For the tee-total slugs, she takes great pleasure in going out in the middle of the night with a torch, a trowel and an unhealthy level of sadistic pleasure in chopping them up alive. As far as I'm aware, they never made it into her legendary casserole. Or did they...
  17. BJL's Delia/Stones question definitely makes the cut. Jeremy, I like your style - I might have to make a new round with these kind of questions and even tailor a few to my office... Who is the biggest gimp in the company? John. Who is the best employee in the company? Rowanofski.
  18. What's with everyone's obsession with tube questions?! Maybe it's because we don't have one in our leafy suburbs? I thought everyone saw that as a good thing, but we're obviously kidding ourselves! Anyway, they are all good questions, but I do have one in there already about the tube. What's the only tube station not to have any of the letters of "mackerel" in it? The somewhat contentious answer is St. John's Wood. Contentious in case someone wants to get pedantic about the Saint abbreviation. Will probably also throw this one in there as part of a set of "What comes next?" stolen straight from the Clockhouse Quiz! Pimlico, Victoria, Green Park, Oxford Circus....... A: Green Park Final talk of tube questions - the only 2 tubes with all the vowels? A: Mansion House and South Ealing. Any Science & Nature or Entertainment questions from anyone?
  19. Bonjour, buenos dias, gutentag and all that lark. I'm running a pub quiz as an opening gambit to my work summer party tomorrow. I've put together a good few questions already (have to admit I did steal one or two from Tuesday's Clockhouse quiz!), but am in need of a few extra teasers to throw in. So far, I've roughly divided it to General Knowledge, Sport, Entertainment (Music, Film & TV), Science & Nature, Geography and a picture round. Any suggestions? Nothing too hard - the average age in my company is early-mid 20s and they're all a bit simple quite frankly! Cheers!
  20. Population of Ireland: 5,981,448 Global Irish Population: 80,000,000 These statistics always crack me up. Everyone wants to be Irish I suppose. I went along with my own genuine Irish beauty to this and can mostly echo everyone else's praise. My highlights included seeing a 60-something lady so drunk she had to be reluctantly carried home by her grown up kids and the PA telling people to leave the public park I remain less convinced as to the new breed of Irish dancing which apparently involves latex bodysuits and arabic-style flouncing and body caressing! Apparently, if you add a fiddle, you're grand, so. It was most entertaing to watch the old Irish gents with their jaws dropping at such spectacles though. Any chance of getting better burger/ice cream vans next year? Both were crazily overpriced and rubbish.
  21. What a cracking event it was too. I doth doff my cap to the worthy back-to-back champion. I'm distraught at my weak finish, but have already been rethinking the strategy for next year. It's all about the run - I think Paul had almost a minute's recovery before we even showed up at the Clockhouse! It must have been the pit stop we made for a Tennent's Super at Barry Off License on our way down... Very impressed with everyone's efforts really. Thanks again to the organisers. Loved it.

It's great in SE22 near the actual Rye. I guess you're looking at somewhere near the Tesco express (ripoff but handy). I've lived in a few spots in SE22 and like any eejit, will proudly say whichever street I am on is the best in the area... But seriously, it is the best in the area! When I was just off Lordship Lane, we hardly ever bothered going to the park (Dulwich or Peckham) even though both were just a 5-10min walk away. But living on the actual Rye, we roll into the park much more often. If you want to go to the bars and restaurants you?ll always make the effort, but if it?s a lazy day you?re after then the couch always seems a suitable alternative ? not so with the Rye so near. Love it. Can feel a little ropey very late at night, but I?ve never felt truly unsafe.
  23. I'm there! Just a quick rules question... is it a legitimate tactic to pour the shot in the pint?
  24. I don't suppose anyone has a phone number for this place do they?
