  1. "I think it's OK to mention these things, the implication by R&A that these weren't violent crimes is daft, or is it just me? The criminals were not requesting the possesions of the people in question, there was an implicit, if not overt threat of violence, which makes it a violent crime by my reckoning." yes i think you're right i.e there is a threat of violence. So therefore that is really intent However, I guess i was responding to the post 'people may get scared moving to ED' and saying that 'no, they wont if they hear about a few bag snatchings...' i think that's what i was getting at. I think there's a scale of crime and when it involves a weapon, then that is serious. Whereas I personally wouldn't hold a bag snatcher as overly serious.
  2. I agree that it's easy to become complacent, however i'm not sure what you can do to stop this sort of thing happening? I guess not carry valuables around with you and then if your bag gets snapped, you don't put up a fight and it doesn't matter as much??? But this sort of petty crime is part of living in london and to be honest isn't that shocking to me personally. Or is that just me? It's violent crime that scares me.. knives etc and that happens in the richest / smartest parts of london cos that's where rich people live..... e.g. my rich boss was held up at gun point in the hallway of her house in primrose hill, whilst carrying her 5month old baby in broad daylight. We should probably expect these incidents to rise slightly in light of the economic troubles and high unemployment edit: to clarify i meant to say violent crime happens in both rich and more challenging areas (obv not just rich!)
  3. OR wait for CGT announcement and buy anywhere you want
  4. but not quite the 'leafy/villagey' feel of peckham rye... :)
  5. and make sure you never admit you live in SE15
  6. is it possible to get done for being in a bus lane AND stopping on a red route? I.E. ?240 fine *blood drains from face*
  7. my partner just pulled into a bus lane cos he broke down (ran out of petrol). he was there probably 30 mins whilst i went and got him some petrol. i assume he's got no chance....? It was a Mon-Sund 7-7pm bus lane on Camberwell New Road any ideas as to whether he's got a chance to appeal? I've been reading around and had he NOT pulled into the bus lane and just stayed in the middle of the road - he'd be fine. But he thought he was doing the right thing by pulling over.... I've spent an hour googling but i think we're going to have to take the hit
  8. Happiness is smile shaped http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/programmes/happiness_formula/4787558.stm Research into happiness suggests that our levels of happiness change throughout our lives. People were asked how satisfied they are with their lives. Most people start off happy and become progressively less happy as they grow older. For many people, the most miserable period in their life is their 40s. After that most people's levels of happiness climb. This graph (see attachment) shows average life satisfaction based on extensive research from the British Household Panel Survey between 1991 and 2003. It seems men are slightly happier on average than women in their teens, but women bounce back and overtake men later in life. Women start with lower levels of average life satisfaction than men. The low point seems to last for longer for women - throughout their 30s and 40s, only climbing once women reach 50. Then women tend to overtake men. Men start slightly higher than women on average, and their lowest point is their 40s, climbing again once they reach 50. 9. just reading around more... http://www.building.co.uk/crossrail-budget-may-be-slashed-by-a-third/5000374.article quote from this article Meanwhile, it is understood that Network Rail is examining the implications of dropping plans for the ?3bn remodelling of London Bridge station, the next phase of the ?5.5bn Thameslink programme. This is in addition to ?100m of cuts that Network Rail was asked to make this week. enough platforms for The South London line now??????
  10. Admin - just slightly confused as to why this thread got lounged when it discusses the implications to: The South London Line The London Bridge upgrade and The East London Line All three directly effect East Dulwich residents 'transport' Anyway - i've added my post to the end of another link in 'general' which is discussing the same thing but is out of date... shame as this could really impact a lot of residents if the cuts somehow change the dynamic of the three Edit to say that a post on the tube in honor oak is more relevant? even more confused
  11. I've just been listening to radio four interviewing a spokesman about the rail cuts They said that the 'Thameslink upgrade' has been scrapped Does anyone know more about this? Regarding the new network rail cuts.... Is that linked to what's going on at London Bridge? Apprently anything that 'doesn't have a signature' will be scrapped. Does the East London Line extension have a signature yet? Would the South London Line be kept if the last two are scrapped? Would this mean we could we keep our direct to london trains? According to the program there's a report being released in a few days

  13. i think the rate for part time nannies is higher for this very reason... i.e. full time rate drops because of the hours advantage
  14. Currently those that get the train from QRP, get to QR in the morning and hop on a train to London bridge - there within 10 mins. They would AIM for certain train to reduce platform time. Then they get the tube and carry their journey on In future they'd have to get a train to PR or Canada Water CHANGE. Then wait for another train and get on that to london bridge As a commuter you therefore must know that a 'change' is slow at the best of times and that's assuming tube like regularity... not overground slow changes or ELL changes where they'll be just 4 trains an hour...? Slowing down a commute into London has real knock on effects to commuters. How can you not understand this as detrimental to our transport service in the local area? Why is there across party commitment including Boris Johnson to keep the SLL when it was such a good idea to cut it? I remember you used to say that it was a personal campaign against boris... but now even he's on board. Is he crazy like us? is he being completely irrational like us? If it's not a cut to local transport services i dont' know what is Also, as someone pointed out earlier there's a risk that we don't get the replacement services you talk about. This is a real risk and any rational person would want to campaign doubly hard to keep our existing services because of that real risk...
  15. Wow Huguenot what a rant - hilarious. If you don't like this discussion then stop reading these threads. Clearly a number of people will be directly affected by the proposal, hence it cropping up on the local forum time and time again. It is after all a LOCAL forum, here to discuss LOCAL issues such as the CUTTING of local transport services in order to serve another district's (NON LOCAL) needs. It's a perfectly rational debate and we're losing it (lost)anyway so why are you so bothered? Last I looked there wasn't a random-angry forumite sitting on his/her own on a train on the way to London bridge. It's not just Denmark hill either, it's other stations like Queens Road, Battersea, Wandsworth Road and Clapham (the northern line is a mess) London Bridge does, after all, feed the City of London which is (was!) one of the top financial districts in the world, so i would guess that more than one person works there. Moreover I have walked from Blackfriars to London Bridge and it was a great deal more than 'just three more flipping minutes' more like 15-20mins and that assumes people weren't walking east from London Bridge to their place of work.... If you add 20mins each way to a Londoner?s journey it is a BIG deal. If you work 7:30am to 6:30 at night your travel time is significant and if you add 40 mins to that, it's a non starter. Especially if you have family at home or say your nursery charges you ?1 a minute if you're late(!) So using exaggeration to prove your point isn't going to wash with those people and if i might add looks a little desperate. I totally support this campaign and i don't use that train at the moment, but i used to (from Queens road peckham) and i remember the drama of trying to squeeze on it each morning. So, with respect, it's not about MY journey is it, or ME ME ME as you put it?
  16. wow great article perhaps next time there's a huge queue, take a photo on your blackberry/phone and then that'll mean you could use it as evidence and NOT miss your train... the amount of trains i've missed because of long queues is depressing
  17. also, i'm not 100% sure on this but i don't think a 'TFL caution' is the same as a 'police caution' it may be that a tfl caution would not come up as a criminal offence.. you may wanna look into this in case they do give a caution also find out if it's something that goes away after a year or so? i'm sure you'll be fine either way though
  18. do you normally buy tickers on your credit/debit card? if so, you could post through a copy of your bank statement showing that you normally buy tickets for this journey and that this was a one off you could also suggest to confirm that the queues were silly-long by looking at CCTV images (too much hassle but would show that you were not lying and confident to prove it) also possibly a character reference from someone at work or equivalent showing that you're not the sort to jump a barrier and that you have'nt been in trouble before good luck
  19. bring your own hand soap (plus all sterilsation wipes/gel etc) I told a midwife that the soap dispenser was empty in our shared bathroom (as was the one by the sink outside our shared bathroom) for nearly two days and she just replied, "it's not my job to fill 'em" That kinda sums up my experience on the post natal ward at Kings
  20. i guess so, i just find him (and osborne) so insincere and forced from bullingdon club to roll-your-sleeves-up and get down to peckham to debate 'real' issues
