17 month old and newborn - will I need childcare?
JDR replied to monkeymoo's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I'm reflecting what others have said but I'd returned to work when no 2 arrived. As she was in nursery I kept her their. This kept our place for my return to work later. Obviously lots of people manage without but I would have gone crazy as my daughter dropped her naps around the time no 2 was born. I admitted defeat though and did get a cleaner... This did help hugely especially when I returned to work and even more so when no 3 arrived a year later ;-) good luck with your choices -
As the first responder said, contact Southwark and do some searches on here. There are lots locally and it depends what you want. Full days/ term time only/ walking distance etc should be considered and then search on here. We've sed a childminder, excel and the villa. Very mixed experiences... Childminder and the villa we loved and would recommend but depends where you live and you really do need to see them to judge what's important. I had no idea what I wanted and it was only by the second visit to a nursery I really got an idea. Also, the most popular have waiting lists around 2 years! Worth starting the calls now as several close their waiting lists as well. Good luck

Been reporter John Pinnar.... Seen in several local shops on different days. Kept saying hello because he looked familiar!

The one thing not said is that Wiltshire food will deliver them frozen, she would then need to heat them up.... There aren't a lot of options these days as Social Services have been dramatically cut these things seem to get worse

Fushia you are right, my issue is the organisation of them rather than individual staff members who have always been very professional. In that respect I haven no complaints.

1983groke I am a physio and tbh irrelevant of the Drs level of knowledge ie GP / reg/cons what they write on physio referrals is terrible! Lazy? Or just lack of respect for the knowledge of other healthcare professionals? Not sure... However you are correct about GP contracts... Though I believe another problem with the contracts are that they can't close their lists for short periods. Meant to stop them declining patients that they didn't want but they had minimal time periods they could close for. This has had the unintented effect that thy don't close them at all and end up oversubscribed. They daren't close them in case their numbers go down too far. They are at fault because they may be following the contract but not the moral and ethical duty they have. My experiences are varied. In the past excellent, cause for complaint due to not investigating a condition the doctor himself suggested that I had and more recently poor / non existent appts. I'm very capable of getting what I need, but being an articulate middle class forceful individual should NOT be the way to get basic healthcare.

Medical work experience sought this summer - can you help?
JDR replied to Jagger's topic in The Family Room Discussion
The circumstances I'm talking about would be mainly observational/ completely unpaid and they largely stopped 10+ years ago. She will get a lot more credit on an application to med school with real patient contact. I personally did work placement within portering ( the first female thy had ever had)and an observational time within a physio dept but that doesn't tend to be allowed these days. Now the applicants have to do a lot to separate themselves. Ideally real contact with the unglamorous side of healthcare ie elderly/ infirm. I also hasten to add I was applying to be a physio and this was nearly 20 years ago. Th expectations of personal contact have increased since then. Good luck finding something -
Medical work experience sought this summer - can you help?

I'm unable to offer those things and you will find that there aren't many options for those to happen. I work in Lewisham healthcare and there is a fairly blanket policy related to age/insurance/confidentiality/criminal record checks (admittedly we get told something different each time it crops up). I would suggest she tries to get work as either a volunteer at a hospital/ home or takes some paid work as a carer. I've had medical students come around with me and unless she has real experience of patients she will be much less likely to be taken on. -
I'm going tomorrow night but has anyone tried it yet?

The fair was fab and I'm sure Uncleben on't mind pitching in next year to arrange an adult only section, maybe an evening event? The old 'Edfest' was great prior to your recent different but excellent festival. Book readings, showcasing films, local film actors Q&A, I remember Bill Bailey in a tent doing a packed out show.... The kids should be at the main fair as most of the stallholders are aiming their wares at parents and their children and it is for the whole community. I don't hear children complaining about adults drinking beer and distracting from their festival. Also, the organisers very sensibly largely kept kids/adults activities at opposite ends of the park. And Uncleben I've no idea how long you have lived here for but if less than 10 years you would have had a pretty good idea of what you were letting yourself in for....

I work in Healthcare and was only recently given my 2 doses of MMR. There are a significant number of adults born during 70's largely who didn't get full imms. They'd stopped the single vaccines and not started the combo so I got TB and Rubella but not measles or mumps ( hence the outbreaks at Universities of mumps about 10 years ago as most of their intake hadn't either) All my children have had it, though the third was a bit late as I was a bit lax with my visits to the GP with her. Even now though imms don't give 100% reliability as seen with children getting whooping cough despite having had the vaccs.

I've also heard about the Peckham refreshment rooms.... I know one of the lead people and can highly recommend his food as we went to a pop restaurant evening he ran last summer. Have booked my babysitter in anticipation....

If you mean this morning. I think there was a accident by New Cross Gate and the road was closed. It caused chaos over a very wide area as far as brockley/ forest hill....

Southwark Primary School Admissions for Sept 2013
JDR replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I'm not affected this year but would advise not to panic. You are normally placed on the waiting lists for schools that were higher up your choice. Also, there is a huge amount of movement, particularly in the next two weeks as people accept/decline places but it continues right up until Sept. the worst that happens is you go to a school temporarily and change later as we did (beginning of year two) as London has such a transcient population moving schools is quite normal. Hold on it should be ok but may be nail biting enroute xx -
It hopefully means the front will be cleared but under the arches along Blenheim not....
-
Uncleben - the artist you refr to are locally and in some cases of national renown. I'm unclear why they are work shy when renting, making, and supporting their own businesses? Perhaps you know something I don't?
-
Londonmix - I agree with that part, but the council were also hoping to take over all decisions regarding the arches as well which are along Blenheim Grove- (though they now state this was only due to a poorly worded document)I am all for the reinstatement of the beautiful architecture with space to appreciate its scale. ( though the alleys smell significantly better than they used to be and I'm not going to miss the hair tumbleweed that frequents them). Agin it's the balance the council strikes. As much as we don't like the status quo we have to work with existing businesses from all ethnic backgrounds and improve it within our varied communities. Personally I'm really excited about it, so long as its done sympathetically. Anyway, done my night on the soap box, will retire now and put my head back in the box ;-)

Dbboy, I work in healthcare locally and bemoan the loss of the shops every time a patient hears I live in Peckham... Jones and Higgins as being better than a visit to the west end. I now officially live in east Dulwich but my true allegiance still lies in Peckham... Hopefully one day I may get to return ;-) and I continue t thank Eileen Conn for being a brilliant advocate of Peckham and such a notable force within the umpteen committees she sits on with regards this stuff. The fact several terrible options have been avoided is due to her quick and timely dissemination of info over the past 12/13 years. She truly deserves a medal

I've lived here for 15 years and you're right it's well documented, though this is a great forum for increasing general knowledge. We know its supposed to be restoration but worried council will take the heart of the area out in the process.... I'm familiar with the plans, the restoration of the the room off platform three and staircase etc.... These are well known but the council and planners still don't have definitive plans and these are still in progress. To make sure it is what the residents and traders want we need active involvement in the process. There have been several versions over the years and there has been many a misrepresentation by authorities in the past ( notably regarding the 'unused' warehouses when they wanted to build a tram depot). To this end we all need to stay engaged if we want the area to have amenities we want at the end of the process

I have three girls and would say medium sized garden and lots of storage space.... Though we have a house with good sized Arden, it's a dump and unusable so patio area currently used lots for swingball and trikes

Anyway, just heard that the councils plans were discussed this afternoon and a few locals attended with feedback. The councils plan appeared to be showing them clearing all of the land for vacant possession but this will not be happening. There has been some community protection agreed for local enterprises.... Relayed from Peckham Visions Facebook page ( look yourself for full detail as I can't cut and paste on this device...)

I'm not against some chains but don't think it is necessary to make it like everywhere else.... It can be a better shopping street nd maintain artist studios alongside them. It is the very like of these people who have facilitated the recent influx of young people who are starting to bring some of the shops back to life. It's a question of balance. No one I know wants it as it is at present but we don't have to rip it soul out in the process
