  1. London's Fallen.

The Mayor, was, is and will remain a disaster for London

"Sadiq Khan’s legacy: 772 six figure earners in TfL alone, 18 TfL employees on over £250,000 Sadiq paid himself £171,587 in 2022-23, up £21,000 from four years ago, What do you get? 4.99% council tax increase, ULEZ tax, Mayoral tax doubled to £471, Knife crime up, Acid attack capital of the world, Shoplifting up 48% Muggings and picketing up x3

He’s filling his mates and his own pockets, laughing at you in his bullet proof Range Rover Sentinel paid for by the taxpayer."

"More than 1000 of his City Hall staff are on a salary of £100,000 or more per year"

So were is the value of money in that , and you know what, we all pay for it from our council tax. More administration and more of a burden on the people. He is out of touch with reality.

And as for Susan Hall, her campaign was only about Ulez, it was the only thing she ever brought up, when London has so many other problems that she didn't ever mention once. Her hope was that the voters in the outer London Boroughs would get her over the line, she failed miserably.

And why does the new mayor think Londoners should provide school meals for children, not his, or our responsibility, or does he now control the running of schools as well.  And as for air quality, its been proven Ulez has made practically NO difference. Where is all the money he's generated, certainly not back into London, otherwise he wouldn't have raised his part of the council tax for 2024/25 by 8.3%. WE pay more and get less each and every year.  Well if that's the case, the scrutiny of borough councils needs to increase 1000+ fold and be held to account for the actions they take and the decisions they make.

His "winners" speech was no more than hot air, saying how he represents all Londoners, I'll tell you what, lets switch Mayors and have Andy Burnham, Manchester can have Khan, At least Burnham is a proper politician with proper values who actually cares about people.

  2. Pudding rice used to be in the same aisle as tinned fruit if that helps??

My preference is the Sainsburys fruit and veg aisle over Morrison any day of the week and Lidl, although I adore Lidl for other things they sell and their speciality weeks.  However Sainsburys size of peppers varies (small to moderate) week to week but the price remains constant, fresh mushrooms are hit and miss, some weeks they have them other weeks what's there I wouldn't touch with a barge pole. Gave up on the oranges as they also became much smaller but at the same price.

Nectar is a money saver compared o the price without the Nectar reduction. That's the same for all four of the big brand supermarkets. It may have flaws but saving money is what its about. Just some thoughts.

  3. FredMarsh, I sympathise with you. I suspect the coral fencing at the entrance is to prevent people legging it out of store with unpaid for goods in hand. It does feel a bit like herding cattle as you describe it. Perhaps the reduction in customers is a response to this and the lack of previously available services.

I find self check out is quicker if I do it myself and since the new self service points have been installed the screens work much better as they are as of today still newish. The old ones were "knackered" and continued to regularly fail.

I had to buy some whisky as a present for someone yesterday, the Sainsbury staff took it away, removed the security tags and returned it, so that all went simply.

Unfortunately the days of what was the original Sainsburys in Peckham and Forest Hill are long gone, as are many of the old shops I remember from the mid 70's, i.e. Kennedy's. The world continually changes and as we get older we have to keep up.

I saw something really sad in Peckham yesterday, a very, very old woman walking down Hanover Park by Primark on the corner with Rye Lane, bent almost half over, pushing her own four wheel trolley along, taking her time.  Made me  realise how lucky I am.

Yes, checking the receipt to make sure Nectar has been applied is always worth doing. Ditto Tesco Old Kent Road this week were what the label of the stack of fruit said one price and even with the Tesco card, the price at checkout was different, that resulted in photo's and it still being checked by Customer Service......

As for "Sainsburys always being horrible", I have to disagree with you on that.

  4. When I was there at lunch time today the work was well underway and they seemed to be finishing the final works so hopefully tomorrow the bus stop may have "re-opened".

There was enough space for the P13 to have gone to an alternative location in the car park to drop off and pick up passengers today. It was sheer laziness by TfL not to make alternative arrangements.

  5. That will be a sad loss to Walworth, last time I went past it looked as though it had undergone a makeover.

Times change, shopping habits change, blame the likes of amazon and online shopping for the closure, convenience is good but it has hidden consequences.  But then it could be down to the cost of running the site, who knows or just a cost cutting exercise by M&S.

    Sad anyway.

I've put this in the transport section as I expect this will get the most interest

Susan Hall, Tory - scrap ULEZ day 1 (not legally feasible), fed up with cyclist dangerous behaviour, will remove LTNs that clog up our roads, and believes that the expansion of cycle lanes is wretched and causing massive congestion

Zoe Garbett, Greens, - ULEZ could go futher and mentions SUVs that are compliant , Silvertown tunnel just for public transport and active travel (yay!), supportive of LTNs and cycle lane expansion.  Could take green/lefty votes away from Labour

Rob Blackie - wanted ULEZ expansion delayed and fairer (?), wants Sutton successful smarter travel plan rolled out wider - increased cycling by 75% and cut car use by 6%, free hire bikes on Sundays (yay).  A cyclist.

Sadiq Khan - says he was responsible for enabling rollout of LTN funding.  A little misleading, the LTN went from government to London Boroughs via an application process, whereas for the rest of the country local authorities bid directly to government.  I expect this was a quick pragmatic decision by government as the best way to get the money distributed when we were still in lockdown.  Mayor's strategy - safer streets, boost active and public transport.  Net zero ambitions more advanced than many other parts of UK

Howard Cox, Reform - scrap ULEZ, LTNs and 20mph.  Get our country back.  Believes Highway Code changes were authored by an asylum inmate, and are a cyclists charter (obviously doesn't understand changes to Highway Code which clarified cyclists' position in the road, but otherwise was more about better cyclists behaviour).  Scrap excessively wide cycle lanes (I can only think of the Embankment, which is probably one of the least of motorists issues).  Expect will split the Tory vote.

    Changes to the Highway Code

    https://www.gov.uk/government/news/the-highway-code-8-changes-you-need-to-know-from-29-january-2022

    Includes:

    • when people are crossing or waiting to cross at a junction, other traffic should give way
    • if people have started crossing and traffic wants to turn into the road, the people crossing have priority and the traffic should give way
    • people driving, riding a motorcycle or cycling must give way to people on a zebra crossing and people walking and cycling on a parallel crossing

A parallel crossing is similar to a zebra crossing, but includes a cycle route alongside the black and white stripes.

I've not examined the manifesto's in depth and much of the above is from statements on X, public meetings, media, and the like.  Happy to be corrected.  And yes I did plagiarise much of this!

Personally disappointed that the hierarchy of road users didn't go further, ie assume that it is the fault of the larger vehicle where there is a collision until shown otherwise.

Not sure if you are merely making statements or if there is a question which comes out of the above???????????????  🤣
