Hi all, In case any of you has a child in Year 1 who would like to give cricket a try this summer, Dulwich CC still has a few remaining spaces in its Saturday morning "under 6" sessions. These will run from 9am until 10am at the Dulwich Sports Club in Giant Arches Road (off Burbage Road), starting on 25 April and continuing until mid July. The cost is ?95. We also have spaces in our Wednesday evening session for girls in Year 4 and above. If you are interested, send me a PM as I don't check the forum that regularly. There are caps on numbers so that we can ensure appropriate coaching resource. To pre-empt questions about other age groups, our under 7 to under 12 groups are close to fully subscribed at this point, and we are operating waitlists while we chase renewals from a final few members. There are, however, plenty of opportunities to play at other local clubs and I can point you in the right direction if you need assistance. Sam

Isn't there a mobile mast on the Pelo ground, within the Estate? Doesn't seem to be on the diagram, but just googled it and it seems there is a separate planning application to upgrade it? planbuild.southwark.gov.uk:8190/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=_STHWR_DCAPR_9558973

The independent school traffic is made worse by the fact that many parents with younger children are dropping one child at DPL or DC and the other at JAGS. Here's a suggestion: parents of children at all three schools drop their children in the Dulwich Park car park, and the three schools run "walking buses" (or minibuses if they must, although it's more than walkable and something similar works well at DPL at present) to each of the three schools.

Football for 3 year old Sunday morning
legalalien replied to ljohnson's topic in The Family Room Discussion
I think football magic start at 3- not in Dulwich Park but very close by http://www.footballmagiccoaching.co.uk/sunday_football.html -
I've just had a flyer from the Village Ward Labour Action Team advising that the Cabinet Member for Regeneration, Planning and Transport and the Leader of the Council "have agreed to completely drop the ban on right hand turns from the proposal". This will be formally confirmed in a report delivered at the meeting on the 28th. Officers have apparently been asked "to come back as soon as possible with revised options which improve safety without causing traffic congestion elsewhere in Dulwich".

Don't get me wrong - I don't think a trial is a great idea, but given Southwark Council seem to have been taken over by a vociferous cycle lobby I have some real doubts about the integrity of the process. Judicial review proceedings are extremely expensive - those in power seem to have publicly bought into the idea of trials - so it might pragmatically be a least worst option. Given the extensive traffic jams in Calton Ave / woodwarde ave/ the village in the last week, I did wonder whether the council were conducting a trial already. Good luck to anyone who tries to rat run those routes - or gilkes crescent if the massive building programme at the audi site goes ahead.....

According to this http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/1685800/1574294730/name/KickStands_July+1+2014+Briefing+note.doc, southwark officers, after a two day briefing with a cycling consultancy, now embrace the idea of trialling things on a temporary basis (language a bit unfortunate, it sounds as though some sort of "thought reform" process has gone on).So before committing lots of cash, why not trial the no right turn ban using an experimental traffic order? And then we can see what traffic chaos may or may not ensue?

We went here http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Review-g651666-d1739817-Reviews-Kinderhotel_Almhof-Gerlos_Tirol_Austrian_Alps.html With a group of friends the year before last - fantastically well set up for kids, high altitude so the snow lasts until late in the season - we went in April and it wasn't cripplingly expensive, the all inclusive food package was worth it. Nice rooms, family friendly food for children, great pool and I enjoyed the end of day yoga classes. Kids lessons at the hotel itself, you have to drive or get a bus to the main skifield but not far and no hassle. Ski hire at the hotel. Generally cheaper to fly to Munich rather than Innsbruck .

The Dulwich estate ? modern day reverse Robin Hood ?
legalalien replied to DadOf4's topic in General ED Issues / Gossip
James, unless I am missing something you are indicating that someone at Judith Kerr has disclosed confidential information to you about the terms of their lease from the Dulwich Estate, in breach of the confidentiality clause in their lease. If so that would put them in breach of their lease? Why would you post that in a public forum? Presumably the info about the lease was also transmitted to you in confidence? Am I missing something? -
Yes but as yo've mentioned it several times now and noted that they've been asking for six years it's obviously an issue. If Heber have an ongoing issue about lack of sports space then why not start a thread asking for support on that. Is all I'm saying.
-
Maybe. Ms millar was on SkY this morning with the chap from the independent schools conference, not entirely convinced by her performance, interestingly she seemed to be drawing the line between "well heeled schools" (state and private) vs others,,which I habe some sympathy with. Keane, have you had a thread about Heber's situation/ who, apart from Alleyns, has the school engaged with?. I suspect a community brainstorm about Heber's games facilities might be more productive than sniping at Alleyns. Have you spoken with eg SCST or the chaps at the Griffin?
-
Mako - fair comment. I'm just generally tired of having well heeled parents telling me I'm morally wrong for sending my child to a private school, and that they would never choose a school outside the state system. Including a couple of people who have backtracked when their only personal option turned out to be the "wrong" kin of state school. Bu t you didn't , of course, say that.
-
Well, I can only go on personal experience of people I know, so not scientific, obviously. :)
-
I'm saying that some private schools locally are more socioeconomically diverse than some state schools locally. There's a big variation between state schools locally - as Ofsted measures of things like free school meals historically indicate. The suggestion seemed to be that my child should be sent to a "good" local school so that he could broaden his horizons (but that I wouldn't be expected to send him to a poor inner city type school) - which I find a surprising argument to make....
-
Seriously? My son (who doesn't go to Alleyns, for the record) spends most of his free time playing sport with kids from "good local schools" and their life experiences and outlook are no less narrow / more broad than those at his school as far as I can tell. Their parents are certainly less diverse, culturally and socioeconomically.
-
Mako I don't see that as a problem. I expect school to maintain discipline, demand at least a superficial level of mutual respect, and educate my children to a stated standard within the academic curriculum (i include stuff like sport, music, art here). Their moral education I consider to be primarily my domain - sure I want the staff to tell me if they're behaving inappropriately, but soft stuff like empathy, awareness of the world around them, etc etc I think is a parental responsibility. And I take it very seriously. Is that so wrong? I have plenty of life experience to share.

Haberdashers' East Dulwich - 751 families supporting
legalalien replied to James Barber's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Actually just coming back to an earlier point, the bids don't just need to show that there's support for "a secondary school" on the site, they need to be tied to a particular secondary school and there needs to be proper evidence that those who have signed up have received reasonably detailed info about the particular option in question - or at least that's what the material on the new schools network site seems to indicate ( including the template survey which says it is approved by dfe). ( with my stickler for detail hat on it's not clear to me how the bidders are going to evidence this, eg there's little detail given on the online sign up form for Charter. Maybe email more detailed info to those who have signed up and give them a chance to withdraw?) Am sure those involved in the bid know what they're doing but having multiple bids doesn't seem to fit well with the dfe reqts. A pity that there couldn't be a single form, with people listing their preference... Intexas, this is why I don't think leafleting me makes sense. The question I'm being asked to answer isn't whether I think there should be a new school, it's whether I would choose Charter 2 over Charter 1, a decision I guess I would take in practice having regard to the likelihood of getting in to Charter 1. But given I am very close and the two schools will presumably be similar, how do I make that choice? By nominating Charter2 I'd be suggesting there was something lacking at Charter 1, wouldn't I? Enough on this - must stop googling.... -

But not difficult to cut around the back past Bessemer surely? How can it be sensible to have two parallel schools with the same governing body within 500m and not find a way to share facilities / merge? -

But isn't it effectively one site? With just a playing field to cross ? Which is why I don't get it? -

New Charter School on Dulwich Hospital Site
legalalien replied to littlek1cker's topic in The Family Room Discussion
Hopping over here after posting on the Habs thread. I live in the Existing Charter catchment and received a leaflet today about the new school proposal. I'm not personally affected (although i do have a Year 5 child so I guess could "vote"): is there an obvious reason why Charter are pursuing this as a bid for a new school rather than an expansion to the existing school? Has the LA already determined that there is a requirement for a new school? Does the funding for the purchase of the site / set up cost come from a different funding "pot"? Intuitively an expansion / facility sharing would seem much more efficient, especially if the catchment areas of the two schools look to be similar? The cynic in me thinks that from the point of view of parents within the existing Charter catchment, this looks like a very good opportunity to get some additional space / facilities, rather than an attempt to provide school places for those currently in catchment "black holes". It could of course be both :). I assume that parents with children currently at Charter / in catchment are not being encouraged to vote for the new school, as that would skew the info being provided to the LA, but the fact that I was leafleted suggests otherwise? (Not trying to be offensive, just struggling to understand the rationale for two separate but practically adjacent Charter schools....) -

Don't worry - not offended! Hopefully I'm not going over too much old ground, just that I only started to pay proper attention to this when I was leafletted today! Will hope over to the other thread, but if anyone can enlighten me as to the number of new places being proposed by each of the bids I'd be interested....
