Peckham Rye Sexby Garden Fountain Green Water

Recommended Posts

I've often wondered that myself. I also feel that as a centrepiece, this 'fountain' -- really just a jet of water -- rather lets the Sexby Garden down. I wonder if we could crowdfund for a new ornamental fountain.

it's the original design, to match the simple columns flanking the paths and the pergola

is this the sort of thing you had in mind? http://www.travelroma.com/img/gallery/hotels-in-rome/trevi-fountain-rome-hotels-04.jpg - or maybe even this one :0) http://blog.caesars.com/las-vegas//wp-content/uploads/2012/04/forum_shops_trevi_rest.jpg

The green colour is probably due to plankton such as single-celled algae. Before the fountain was restored to operation a few years ago, the pond was full of water lilies, with a large population of newts.

There was a similar thread about this a year or so back.

I think the water was coloured due to some cleaning chemical or similar put in the water (on purpose, to clean the mechanism or something).

I THINK it won't stay that colour, but I may be completely wrong ......

ETA: And I haven't seen the water lately, so it could well be due to algae or similar.

Really?! I was walking round the park the other day thinking how amazing it is especially if you think about the fact it's not exactly a "main" park of London or a tourist destination. Think we're very lucky to have such a well maintained park and personally would happily take a slightly small fountain instead of some of city parks I've seen in other countries.

I think the simple fountain sits well with its surroundings.

Be thankful we don't have an absolute monstrosity like they've put into the (otherwise beautiful) walled garden in Brockwell Park ..... not a fountain, just an ugly lump completely spoiling what used to be my favourite spot to sit, by the little pond :(

See the photo attached. Hideous.

It would be great to commission a local artist to actually make a nice fountain there. The pipe protruding from the water isn't exactly pleasing to look at.

Either of those would be perfect. More is, well, more, as the adage goes.

But seriously, Peckham Rye Park is a jewel of South London and deserves to be a major world tourist destination, and could be if we had some kind of simple fountain in the centre of the Sexby.

Oh, come on!

It's a very pleasant park, but hardly likely ever to be "a major world tourist destination" :)) :)) :))

ETA: Or have I missed some sarcasm?

    • I had certainly heard that Helen Hayes was planning to stand down from being an MP - although I don't think I've seen that confirmed anywhere that I recall. If so, that is a shame, she was generally very competent and she knew the area well. A very good constituency MP and  had performed reasonably creditably in a minor Front Bench role. A loss to Parliamentary politics, in my view, if she is standing down.
    • We've just bought a previously tenanted flat which has come with a large amount of cutlery and cooking utensils which we'd be happy to give away.
    • Sadly this means for those of us who live within this ward the brilliant Helen Hayes will no longer represent us (that is if she's standing again). The Labour candidate for Lewisham West and East Dulwich is Ellie Reeves who has been MP for West Lewisham and Penge before the redrawing of boundaries.  She is sister to Rachel Reeves.
    • Highly recommend Kam Thompson (of Bascoe & Reid) for all your painting and decorating needs.  We've had him back many times and he has now painted our whole house to a fantastic standard. He is also great to have around. His number is 07949507412
