A personal fight?

I quoted you and blah as examples of a particularly patronising approach that has wafted over this thread and you chose to ask me what my problem was.

You accused me of stirring.

Of putting words in your mouth.

And that I was motivated purely by boredom.

THAT's personal.

ETA: and please take "I thought you were taking 'a pass'" as my answer to anything you post in response.... then we can both move on.

Okay, I apologize if I offended you by saying I felt you were stirring shit because you were bored. It genuinely felt that way and like you were personally attacking me out of the blue.

I said what I did because I don't think how you characterized my statement that you quoted was at all the attitude I've approached this with. In fact, I think your characterization of that comment and my approach on this thread in general is inaccurate, insulting and unfair.

The people I have been discussing this with most vigorously had the exact opposite opinion of my approach and last night we all agreed we'd enjoyed hashing it out together and appreciated the level of respect we'd all given one another (that's on the other thread).

I think you are being unfair to both LondonM and myself Maxxi.

As London points out, the other thread was a good exercise in debate. No-one was rude, or was offended even though there are complete differences of opinion. So much is lost in translation when people who don't know each other personally speak with written words, that it is often unwise to judge anyone from language alone. I've done it lots of times, mistaken humour for sarcasm for example. It's so easily done.

I guess we're all done, then.

LM - don't be offended. Perhaps your intention is different to my interpretation.

At the end of the day, all facts can be presented to deliver a particular result. Taking some facts, to support an arguement, ignoring others which contradict the point....

It used to be called 'spin'. I have voted and heard some rather scary conversations at the polling station. Generally indicative of perceptions of versions of truth....but these votes all count.

Either we're staying in and selling our souls to the devil, or being embraced by angels.......we won't know until it's too late. We have to look at where we are, if we think it's a good place and what we think will make it better. And it can be difficult to be objective.

I must say I have felt that the sort of 'debate' on this thread from Blah and LM in particular has often come across as being comprised of a fair smattering of condescending remarks and smug, sanctimonious digs at those who don't share their world view or accept their 'facts' (because apparently we are too dim to 'understand' them). But then if that what passes for 'debate' these days (or more likely just debate on the internet) I suppose that's just life and something to get used to.

No big deal - it will all be over in a few hours.

However, I think I'll avoid the forum for a couple of days, just in case there's an abundance of sanctimonious crowing about the inevitable Remain majority (even if it does demonstrate that close to every second person in the UK is in favour of leaving the EU at any cost - hardly a ringing endorsement of the Union).

I thought this was just a tad condescending...

"I get that you aren't familiar with all of this which of course is fine but its insane to simply dismiss it as speculation when these are bold face verifiable facts just because they don't dovetail with your world view.

This is an important vote. Spend a few hours looking into what I've outlined and if you have any questions I'll try to answer them objectively"

But I may just be being too thin skinned.

Anyway, in all seriousness it's no big deal. You are entitled to your opinion and frankly I can see the merit in a lot of what you say.

Okay, sorry if that came across as rude.

That was after you said that you didn't know about certain trade issues and suggested I didn't either and so the information I provided was pure speculation. My response was acknowledging what you yourself said about your background while explaining it was what I do for a living. Still, I can see how it could come across as rude so I genuinely apologize if it made you feel bad.

It's hard though to gauge tone in written language and tone is everything when trying to gauge intent. LM (as I) posts because of a genuine interest in the subject and in what others have to say. I think we both get a little frustrated when there is hard data/evidence to support something and it is brushed aside. That is only human nature. But I've not seen LM write anything that would rile with me. I on the other hand definitely have days where my level of patience is tested. But I usually stay off public forums on those days :D

Indeed. If we stay in - we will be joined by Turkey. It's what the UK govt wants (although just now it is painfully difficult to admit) and it is clearly what EU Commission wants (as they stressed again just 48 hours ago when they said they were "accelerating" turkey's application for EU membership (not the best timing for Cameron that!).

Personally I believe we will stay in, so we will see. Another million or two residents for our NHS and schools to accommodate.

so here we are in 2025 many years after the referendum where import/exports costs are indeed much higher and (checks notes) arch Brexiteer is now lobbying for a European Commonwealth including Turkey

That article is 3 years old

Possibly not accurate or relevant unless the last 3 years have been a dream, and like Bobby Ewing, i've just woken up in the shower and Boris is still PM

Yeltsin went in 99.

Oh, you are talking about Alexander Johnson?  He is still PM I understand.  That is why the country is so good at present.

    • Where did I say he did a good job? Yup and Corbyn was very close to Len McCluskey and funded by Unite wasn't he...they're all as bad as each other... Labour have to purge their party of the far-left - they're a disaster. Allan Johnson summed it up so well on election night in 2019....
    • Thank you for the detailed advise @trinidad It is definitely damage we are concerned about. I don’t think Evri would agree to pay the bill to fix our gate or letter box if they were to be damaged as a result of their delivery drivers helper. Our doorbell can be heard from outside when rung so we don’t quite believe the aggressive simultaneous door/letter box banging is necessary. It can be quite a shock it is done very aggressively.  I’ll definitely action the steps you’ve kindly provided along with a phone call tomorrow. I do sympathise with the role drivers have and how busy they are, which is why we tried communicating directly with her but sadly we haven’t succeeded
    • What outcome would you like? Disciplinary action? Not to have the driver back? Retraining? I know there is alot of pressure on drivers to deliver within a set day. if he slams the gate, is it evidence he is causing damage, or is the noise a irritant to yourself? You could put a sign up or buy a signing asking to close the gate gentle???? can you hear the door bell from the door? he might be ringing, not hearing and therefore knocking. In trhe notes section of the be livery page, there is a note section, although there is not 100 per cent these notes would be read as these drivers are constantly rushing.  I did a google search for you, i found this and you can try the envri website Contact Us | Evri   To complain to Evri, you can follow these steps: Contact Customer Service: Call Evri's customer service at 0330 808 5456 for assistance with your complaint.    1 Write a Letter: Address your complaint to Capitol House, 1 Capitol Close, Morley, Leeds, West Yorkshire, LS27 0WH.    1 Use the Official Website: Visit the Evri complaints page on their official website for detailed instructions on how to submit a complaint.    2 Email or Call for Specific Issues: For issues like missing or damaged parcels, you can email or call 0800 988 8888, which is free to call.    1 These methods will help you effectively communicate your concerns to Evri.   My driver is called anthony, he is brilliant to be honest. I cant fault him.
    • When I have more time and energy, I will look up the actual number of votes cast for each party in that election, rather than the number of seats won. I'm interested to see that you apparently  think that  Boris Johnson did a good job of "leading the country through Covid." Is your memory really that short? I won't stoop to calling Johnson and his cronies names in the way that you seem to think is appropriate for left wing politicians. At least the left wing politicians have some semblance of morals and a concern for people who aren't in some over privileged inner circle and/or raking in money for themselves on the back of an epidemic. I'm not going to open a can of worms on here  by commenting on the disgraceful so called "purge".
