Saz

Do it - it is quite simply the best holiday you will do. Me and the other half flew into San Fran, did a quick one day tour, then picked up our 25ft RV.

We spent 5 days driving from SF to Los Angeles via Santa Cruz, Big Sur, Pebble Beach (17 mile drive - A-MAH-ZING!!), Hearst Castle, Monteray, Malibu and a couple of other places... probably not in that order as my memory isn't great!!

The views, the places, the fun you will have, will far outweigh any costs you may have to spend!!

It might be fun to do in a funky convertable and stay places, but having your home in the back of the van makes it so, so easy. There are so many camp sites along route one that are reasonably well priced.... some very basic, some with pools and jacuzzis!!!

Was my favourite holiday to date and I would love to go back... wish we had more time to go a little further.

I've never driven SF to LA but have driven LA to SF a few times. It's a great drive and very peaceful. I'm not a camping girl myself (I don't see the point when there are perfectly decent 4 star hotels with room service) but if that's what works for you then there's nowhere better than California. Enjoy.

If.....

If you "do" car camping ( everything goes in the boot, you drive & camp thingy ) then look out for this place

R.E.I.

I used them when I was climbing in & around that area

Join before you go, very good hire deals, from an "air bed" to a "white water raft"

( of course you will need one of those )

But caution when in the shop though. I went a bit mad and bough tons of new climbing kit ( of course I need it all dear ) as it's still way cheaper than here

W**F

When I considered doing this it was expensive and it means spending your holiday driving a truck.

These winniebago's have a very long over-hang from behind the back wheels and you can get into all kinds of trouble if you do not allow for it.

My brother lived for a while in one that was as big as a bus, and it was not an easy thing to drive and less so to manoeuvre.

A GREAT night with you and sazzle at the Clockhouse last night. Even though we found ourselves in the pub quiz and came a respectable middlish - I hope you have a great time and look forward to seeing you both again end of September. Shall we make it another Wednesday? ;)

    • Sorry but I think it's best if people just check things for themselves when they buy things. In three shops/restaurants (from some years back) I just avoid the places concerned, as in all three  cases I was pretty sure it wasn't a genuine mistake, and in one place  it happened more than once and usually late at night.
    • Sorry Sue - me again. This has been on my mind all day, it's a big bug bear of mine. If you don't mind - please can you private message me some of these shops so I can cross reference / add to my AVOID list.  Thanks in advance. Let's make sure this doesn't happen this Christmas, particularly as we head into sales season. Even more problematic in my experience.
    • Pity you didn't quote what you are referring to, Mal. I didn't see the previous post, and my mind is boggling 😮
    • The Cherry Tree was absolutely excellent for a while when a youngish couple ran it and brought in a really good chef. It was them who renamed it The Cherry Tree. They were really turning it around. The chef did fantastic Scotch eggs, and one of the best roasts I've ever had. If memory serves the then owner,  for some reason known only to himself, took a dislike to them and what they were doing and sacked them all. And yes we weren't expecting a top class  meal last Christmas, and we left it too late to book anywhere else, but we weren't expecting it for a hundred pounds EACH to be quite as terrible as it was. Stupid us. Not sure why you are confused by my post, Jazzer? Did I misremember? Now it's got even more confusing because my posts have been merged and your confused emoji is shown at the bottom of the second one instead of the first 🤣
