In medieval times, the area south of the river opposite St Katharines Dock was often flooded at high tide, except for a few pieces of high ground called 'eyots'. The owner of these eyots was a man called Lord Beormund, so they became known as 'Beormund's Eyots'... hence the name, Bermondsey.

Not a lot of people know that.

Ah, the internet... suddenly everyone is an expert on everything! Whether the island is called an 'eg' or 'eyot' (both would be correct) my story is basically true. At least as far as my Archaeology lecturer at Birkbeck College told me!

oddly enough , Oasis used to rehease in Bermondsey in the mid 90s and Liam was barred from nearly every pub in the area.

also I heard that Bermondsey was once Beormund's Sea , or something .

Walked into sitting room first thing this morning, dear froggy would no more go a wooing - he was stretched out on his back sparko, definitely deceased. I covered him with a cardboard box thinking I couldn't deal with it until at least one cup of coffee later.

Quietly reading book, sipping coffee when the box jumped. Coffee and I jumped too. Little bastard must have feigned death to stop the cats teasing it.

    • My car was registered in 2004. Automatic, ULEZ compatible.  Used to use it daily for work until 2016 when retired. Still used 3-5 days weekly after that as was doing voluntary work. My mobility has gradually declined and  it is painful to walk.. Family live in Kent, Essex and Sussex - so need car to visit them. My car battery is 2 years old - when had to call out RAC to assist at home as it was dead, they found it was the original battery installed in 2004!! My car is essential - shopping each week, being able to go to garden centres, or DIY stores, taking the cat to the vet and  other social activities. I now only half fill with petrol every 3- 4 weeks, so save that way. I am careful  with my finances and would be lost without the car. It is regularly maintained (Turners).
    • I remember Tesco- it was on the corner of North Cross Road where Superdrug is now. Very small if I remember correctly.  We shop in Pound land - having discovered that shampoo and conditioner (brand names) were only £1 each. Good selection of most things that we need on a regular basis. It is better than the one in Peckham. Never noticed loud music when I have been in there and have always found the staff helpful and cheerful.
