those of you who have been affected by loud night noise/ anti-social behaviour on Lordship Lane might be interested in this thread on licensing hours on Lordship Lane - http://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/forum/read.php?5,505123,page=1. You think Fri/Sat nights are a pain, just wait till you get it on Thursday and Sunday nights too...

Does anyone know if a kebab shop could be made to get security as part of their licence? I was stood near Kebab & Wine (the kebab shop next to Black Cherry), chatting to a couple of friends a few Saturdays ago, minding our own business after a night out. Now admittedly this was around 3am. But whatever the time was, we did not deserve to have full cans of G&T (posh larger louts in SE22!) thrown at us, nor be on the receiving end of a barrage of unwarranted and really nasty and misogynistic name-calling.

There were at least 20 drinkers stood on Lordship Lane outside the kebab shop and, although I don't know if they were buying their booze in the kebab shop or across the road at the Payless corner shop, they were clearly settling-in for a drink there instead of buying their burgers, having a quick fight or vomit and moving on.

see many threads passim candp - not a nice thing to have happen

But not sure if you were NEAR a kebab shop what security you want as part of their license?

No one (well....) deserves to have anything thrown at them but we all probably know there are times when it's more likely? The reason it happened is little to do with security or license and more to do with a prevailing culture

I hope that doesn't sound like I'm being unsympathetic - but a kebab shop is unlikely to generate enough dosh to pay for bouncers. More likely the place would get closed down

Keef and Sean, is this true? Well then Sean, perhaps you're right and I'd rather someone looked at Kebab & Wine's adherence to the law and licensing rules. But the drinkers were directly outside the shop and popping (well more sort of staggering) in and out of it, rather than just standing somewhere nearby. If they'd been drinking directly outside Black Cherry or Adventure and behaved as aggressively I think the bouncers would have moved them on.

I seem to remember that you have to pay for drinks tickets before you go in, so I guess it's not exactly charging you, but you have to part with money, and you don't seem to get much back for it. Saying that, I've not been there since my wallet got nicked a couple of years ago.

I'm amazed it doesn't get raided every week as it is.

Licence here

Note they are only licensed to sell alcohol up to 1am and only to those having a meal ON THE PREMISES.

135 - Intoxicating liquor shall not be sold or supplied on the premises otherwise than to persons taking table meals there and for consumption by such person as an ancillary to his meal.

'Late night refreshemnt' licenses only the sale of food and non alcoholic drinks.

They are required to have door staff from 10pm

341 - SIA / Local Authority Registered Door Staff are to be employed by the premises from 2200 hours

V interesting DJKQ, thanks. I think the cctv they're required to have would make interesting viewing for a licensing officer. Perhaps they've found some way round the rules with the drink tokens (clearly ancillary to any meal) but god knows where they found that invisible doorman.

No the drink tokens are neither here nor there. There should be NO alcohol sold or SUPPLIED on the premises after 1am and the alcohol that is supplied can only be done so with a meal consumed on the premises. No exceptions. So if they are not doing that then they are breaching the terms of their licence.

If they are running the back room as a bar only they are also breaching the terms of their license. If the Police catch them doing that twice in a seven day period they can apply to a magistrate to force the premises to close. Southwark licensing would be very interested to hear of any breaches and can similarly review and withdraw the license at any point.

    • Thanks for that - none  of mine  have been Mordena - whilst vulnerable cat, think I will just take my chances… Will be having flu though - certainly not by choice - much prefer not to but in vulnerable group.. Avoided them until last year…. Luck of drawer if you are as sick as fog  or just sore arm … assume - god knows - that flu jab is same throughout country.
    • Wow, that is what it costs for one prisoner. So they get full board and lodging, 24 hour  monitoring  in over populated prison, we are led to believe, minimum exercise, assume a tv in each cell provided - in USA it is together with wash hand basin and c toilet - some have showers as well.   Clearly this amount of money takes  into account overstretched and overworked prison officers, protection for them, counselling which is, in my opinion a bare minimum dealing with prisoners in all settings. Do if Sweden can look outside the box, why can’t we? Or are we just not bothered at all / read statistics some where that reoffending is normal and to be frank, with economy as it is at the moment re employment, cost of living and homelessness..not surprised they reoffend to get back inside - food provided, roof over your head - much better than street living, mixing with wrong crowd, trying to get roof over your head, find a job where 90 % won’t employ you as been inside..
    • @beansprout The Swedes seem to have a useful strategy with regard to offenders  which has reduced repeat offending.  I agree that prison time for minor offences is a complete waste of time. Even worse is that prisons are "colleges of crime" where inmates learn about how to be do crimes and worst of all, become exposed to drug taking. I wouldn't advocate having chain gangs as in the USA but some strategy for getting them into say manual work under supervision might be useful - especially if it came with a modest wag. This would be significantly cheaper than the £51,100 it costs per year for  keeping one in jail.
