I'm crap with names, but obviously McNulty is great. Omar is sexy in a scary ugly way - the dumb mixed race detective who works with the white cop is pretty hot too! I loved the female cop character. Very stong.

I feel sorry for DumbAngelo! And Bubbs, I hope he stays clean!

They are all very deep and believable characters. I love their complexity. No 2D goody v baddy lazy cliches here.

Brilliant stuff.

Carver, the mixed race detective is one of my favourite characters... He is, like most characters on The Wire, a flawed individual and sometimes morally reprehensible, but he really matures over time both as Police and a human being. Plus, as you say, he's hot.

We've just downloaded The Corner but are saving it until we have a completely free weekend.

Ah, the wire. One of the best shows ever. Without wanting to repeat what has already been said...I was recommended this by a friend, plus much repetition by charlie brooker in the Graniaud, and after the first 2 episodes both myself and missus Horsebox were hooked. Within a month we are now almost at the end of Season 3.

Character wise: McNulty is a selfish asshole, but portrayed so well, Omar is one of my faves, his dark deapan humour and downright ruthlessness win out, plus herc and carver are a fantastic double act (apparantly i resemble Herc :-S).

What really struck it for me in S3 was the reality of the whole comstat and police performance issue, something that I have been very very involved with in the past.

Do your selves a favour and watch it!

Sorry CWALD, would gladly lend it to you but we d/l'ed it all and have had to delete it episode by episode to free up HD space.

I can point you in the right direction if you want to d/l it all. Just give a PM.

well that's always the question isn't it?

We try and stick to 1 at a time but sometimes it runs to 2 or 3 depending on the day... But the only reason for holding back at all is to have more episodes to look forward to. And with Series 5 being the last one, not many eps left to go after this... :(

Did any other Wire fans spot Wee-Bey's (well, the actor who plays him) recent cameo in Entourage, another HBO production, which came hot on the heels of an appearance by Domenick Lombardozzi who plays Herc? We also noticed Idris Elba (Stringer Bell) makes an appearance in American Gangster, although it took us a while to realise (he looked like he'd been at the pies). Meanwhile Michael Kenneth Williams (Omar) shows up briefly in Ben Affleck's directorial debut Gone Baby Gone (as a cop!!) as does Amy Ryan (Beadie Russell), but we may not get to see that as the UK release has been suspended indefinitely due to similarities with the Madeleine McCann case. Seeing the cast, who bizarrely feel like old friends now, pop up here and there causes me great excitment (pretty sad I know) and is keeping me going until Season 5 comes out next year.

    • Another recommendation for Dulwich Test and Services Centre. Only been using them for a couple of years but wish I’d found them earlier
    • A new roadmap (surely railmap?!) for rail accessibility has been published: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/accessible-railways-roadmap It says "approximately 56% of stations and around 66% of the 1.3 billion journeys that take place on the network have step-free access to platforms...  "£373 million has been committed over the next 5 years to deliver Access for All projects, providing step-free access from station entrances to and between platforms, alongside other essential accessibility upgrades. These works, together, will increase the number of step-free stations across Great Britain from 56% to 58%. "This improvement will make travel easier with step-free access available at stations covering an increased share of total rail journeys – from 66% up to 71%" Don't know what that means for us here: upgrading Peckham Rye would cover a lot of rail journeys but the cost has no doubt increased from the £40m figure previously quoted. So that would eat into a lot of the funding.
