Improving drainage - who to call?

In our new house (which is very old) I think we need better drainage. The back of the house only has a small drain which doesn?t cope well after rainfall. There is no French/ channel drain around the patio. The gardens round here are also clay soil, so bad drainage = mossy lawns. I don?t mind the patio and garden being dug up to improve things in the long term as it?s a bit of a state now anyway.

Am I better to call a drainage service for installation, a builder, or a gardener? Is it something that?s a fairly standard system? Any advice appreciated.

I know Acer Landscaping do this well as part of installing a patio but unsure if they do this alone.

Worth enquiring. Be prepared to wait a while for the quote as they are busy and often gardeners cannot get to computers during the day.

Make sure whoever you get are insured as this requires kango drilling around the house.

I used jack hart for internal damp work and digging French drain. I can highly recommend him. He was very reasonable and the work was an excellent standard. He knows what he's doing, is very tidy. He has many years experience and works with a good team of decorators etc who are also recommended on ED forum. His number is: 07877 805665.

    • These neighbours dislike trees period. They refused to have lost trees replaced by the Estate on our communal green. They don’t like the leaf and seed droppings. These make the grass look ‘messy’. Similarly, they don’t like my policy of leaving the tree leaves where they lie on the grass verge - hence chopping the overhanging branches. It’s like living in the 1950s. My neighbours have three gardeners with leaf blowers who come twice weekly to remove every leaf from their front lawns. Their grass is cut weekly and all the  cuttings put in multiple brown bins. It’s an outdated mindset of the moneyed classes in my view. But sadly, I’m very much in the minority.
