Hi there, I'm moving to East Dulwich next weekend and wonderfully stumbled on this excellent forum and thought I'd throw my hat in the ring and see if y'all can help get me up and running. So...

1. I like sports. Any tips on cycling/squash/football and where to play them?

2. I need a job. I can probably do most things. Any good places to pick up some extra work in the area?

3. I've written (and published) a couple of books. They've been really well received but getting the word out there hasn't been easy (read: nigh-on impossible). Is there anywhere local I could sell them? I was even thinking of a little table in a street market, that sort of thing.

4. Someone told me there's a great organic veg place in East Dulwich; haven't seen it yet though.

5. I like building sheds. Anyone need a shed built?

6. Are there any open mic/acoustic nights around?

7. I think that's probably enough. :-)

Many thanks for reading and, of any answers and input, much appreciated.

Cheers!

Rory

1) There is often a thread in the What's On section about footballers teams.

2) Ditto. Not most things though. So you may get work before me.

3) I am a writer too though not a novelist. Go to REVIEW bookshop when you get down here.

4) SMBS on Lordship Lane.

5) No.

6) Yes, and with a queue several months long.

7) Welcome to this forum and the general area. It's fab. Hope you're here Saturday for the Peckham Rye Park fete!

If you're into folk-influenced music, we have monthly nights Upstairs at the Mag (at The Magnolia on Lordship Lane) on a Friday when we have floorsingers/musicians. It's not open mic as there isn't a mic :))

You can check us out on our website

The next one is on Friday 10 September. If you want to sing/play, come down when the doors open at 8pm and put your name down. Depending on the number of people who want a spot, you will get at least one song and possibly more.

The acoustics are great, and it's a nice supportive audience.

Thanks for all the info! And apologies it's taken so long to say "thanks for all the info!" - hadn't clicked the little thing that tells you when people have written.

Rory - 11 days into East Dulwich life and very happy with it :-)

    • Ohh dear.  Fireworks can be great fun.  Where I used to live the kids would have firework wars/games.  Watching them was more enjoyable than watching  TV. (Which you could hardly hear due to the pops and bangs).  It's not like anyone/anything could stop them. I would still prefer organised public displays that are affordable.   And I agree that fireworks cause problems for wild life, pets and people.   It seems to be one of those things that just happens so we have to put up with it.  But it is still not as problematic here as in other areas in London - that's for sure.
    • I made sure to set off a few today just to rile you guys up 😇😂 Always looking for something to criticise
    • Ugly...maybe..does it bother me..NO! I think its somehow reassuring to see theres still phoneboxes around. East Dulwich may well be getrified but there may well be some elderly people who don't have mobiles and kids who may have lost theirs adults ditto etc etc. I'd rather keep it than lose it...just because i don't use it does'nt mean its not needed.  there are many eyesores in the modern world not all of them as potentially useful.
    • I strongly recommend Balayage salon in Lordship lane as everytime I visit, they make me feel very spicial with thier profisionalism and care.   I have been going there for the last 10 years maybe more, and will never exchange them for any other. They are profisional, welcoming and they also always have an offer. I feel like a new woman every time. X
