I enjoyed the "Camberwell 1963" thread posted by nxjen on an earlier thread and it led me to this interesting early film on Peckham. I don't know where the building in the first half of the film is but in the street scenes about half way through you need to imagine you are opposite HSBC on Rye Lane looking north towards Wetherspoons on Peckham High Street.

A couple more views of Rye Lane in 1913, which I've extracted from a 7MB English Heritage paper available at http://archaeologydataservice.ac.uk/myads/copyrights?from=2f6172636869766544532f61726368697665446f776e6c6f61643f743d617263682d313839332d312f64697373656d696e6174696f6e2f7064662f656e676c69736868322d36363834332e706466.

Given that the 7 July 1913 was a Monday, I wonder if the two were actually both taken on Saturday 7 June. There was a series of photographs taken at different times of day on 7 June 1913, probably to assist an inquiry into whether the speed limit should be reduced to 10mph. Camberwell Metropolitan Borough Council had applied to the LCC for this but there had been objections.

A "monkey parade" is described as "a weekend street theatre of promenading youth".

    • No, you didn’t write the article. But unless you’re a Telegraph subscriber, you haven’t read the article either. Have you read it? The psychopath Telegraph lives behind a (rubber) paywall but using this kind of sensationalist, accusatory headline gets it traction on social media. The headline becomes more important than the article; many will see it and some will take as a statement of fact. And it will be shown on endless “let’s take a look at the papers” segments on TV and radio for 12 hours or more in every news day. And so, a tiny number of reactionary, right wing hacks has a vastly disproportionate influence on the popular conversation despite the papers they work for being bought by almost nobody these days.
    • Trelco are wonderful. James has been super reliable and they are a gem to have around us locally. Trust them completely, will give honest advice and have very fair pricing for all small work around the house or bigger plumbing projects. I've used them multiple times and they will always find the time to help, even when they are busy they will pop round to make sure we aren't stranded which is a nice touch.
    • "attack on the tax", I posted a link, how was that an attack? I didn't write the article, so how was that an attack on the proposed tax?  Are you now saying what can and cannot be posted, when did you become Admin(NOT).
