Latest OS. Mac Pro year old. Went onto 2nd internal hard drive to copy some photos onto Desktop. Message words to effect 'preparing to copy 6800 items onto desktop' spinning pizza came up and stayed up. Cant force quite screen frozen, mouse does move pizza. Swithced off, left for while and on, still the same. left off for several hours then on likewise. switched off and unplugged all. still frozen, tho time is now correct. Any thoughts? Desperate, deadlines!!! All on comp!!

Thanks in advance

Mik

Give this a try:

To start up into Safe Mode (to Safe Boot), do this:

Be sure the computer is shut down.

Press the power button.

Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold the Shift key. The Shift key should be held as soon as possible after the startup tone but not before.

Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple icon and the progress indicator (looks like a spinning gear).

During startup in Mac OS X v10.4 or later, you will see "Safe Boot" on the login window, which appears even if you normally log in automatically.

To leave Safe Mode in any version of Mac OS X, restart the computer normally, without holding any keys during startup.

Thanks for that AlexC. My machine doesnt make that noise, so I missed the opportunity, but there is now progress!!The window is now not frozen and the force quit keys function. Which gave me a chance to force quit 'finder not responding' So far so good, but now its all frozen again and that spinning pizza is not allowing me select finder not responding!!

I think Ill try unplugging again.

Mik

have you managed to shut it down? were you really copying 6800 files or did it spin into the basket ball of love for nothing?

it doesn't sound like a hardware problem. when you had the chance to force quit would it shut down? or did you not try? i didn't think that you could quit finder you just close the window, it's the apps that quit?? but i was in mac support years back...

any joy?

    • This is the point, this is an increasingly large scale event in the wrong location.
    • So Boris Johnson goes on an unhinged rant about the deal using violent gimp imagery (an image repeated by other brexiteers), and I comment on it but it’s MY language you are policing? how come it’s not Johnson and his language you  are commenting on?
    • Is there anyone who does face painting who would be available to come to a children’s party next Sunday 25 May from 11-12ish? It’s a Frozen theme- about 10 kids or so. Please get in touch with more details and an idea of price if so. Many thanks
    • Nope that concern predates the Jerk festival.  But I am talking about when I first moved to SE London and some locals complained that the nice music was too loud. Separately some people are still moaning about the Jerk festival,  Felt some comments were (casual) racist, but that is a different subject matter. That day was great,  A victim of its own success. A kin to Fatboy Slim playing a free festival on Brighton beach, tens of thousands went but it took a long long time to clean up.
