? technically only smokeless fuel. practically, dry wood or coal, broken up pallets, old bank statements. garages and diy shops sell coal/ wood. be careful your fireplace is safe first though- you can get a chimney sweep to clean it- make sure you are not going to kill yourselves with toxic smoke..

DIY shop near Green and Blue in Lordship Lane sells coal and kindling.

Garden centres (eg Shannons in Forest Hill) and places like Homebase or B&Q also usually do.

ETA: Anyone with an open fire who needs a fender? I have one for sale (it's too long for my fireplace), haven't got round to advertising it yet :) It's thirties, copper on top, ?30. :) PM me for a pic :)

My grandmother (smallholder) once burnt collasping-pile-o-shite rabbit hutches belonging to her landlord. Who was not best pleased when she eventually found out.

I burn all kinds of wood in my (smokeless zone approved) stove. Toasty. Far more environment-friendly than coal or similar.

Avoid MDF and other composites (Ikea-ware) - they are full of glue and other noxious things: bad for you, bad for the environment.

But you must get your chimney swept before you burn anything.

    • The empty shelves is well reported, but the sewage smell has been awful for weeks if not months, and just keeps getting worse. It started off near the Costa machine/ behind the delivery and collections booth thing, but now it hits you the second you walk in the store. I’m amazed nothing (visibly at least) appears to be going on to fix it. Somewhat relieved it’s not just me who can smell it!
