We are having the week from he'll. First my daughter caught dreadfull cold whichmy mum now has and then my 19 dayold son developed terrible nappy rash seemingly overnight. It is so bad he can't sleep and is crying and uncomfortable all the time. If it were summer I would keep him nappy free but with the cold am afraid it will never go away. Considering taking to GP can anything be prescribed?

Can you leave him nappy-free for short periods of time after each nappy change - that's got to be better than nothing.

Also did you open a new pack of nappies and then this flare up? I did hear about about a certain nappy within the pampers brand (I think) that was causing chemical rashes - could this be it?

Agree that you should just use water and cotton wool, try to make sure the area is really dry before putting on any creams and a new nappy, and don't use anything perfumed in the bath etc. If it doesn't start to go away or gets worse in the next 2/3 days then go to the GP.....

Best of luck, hope it gets better soon :)

I dont think is purely nappy related as it would be everywhere not just his bottom. We switched to Huggies a few days ago anyway but rash is worse possibly because he had a couple of nights where he slept longish stretches and was not changed for a few hours.

Feel so bad over this and coupled with lack of sleep it's a recipe for lots of tears!

Metanium is the best nappy cream - we use it on babies in hospital who have bad antibiotic related nappy rash - use v v sparingly though - just dab onto the worst areas and then vaseline/olive oil on the rest of the bum, hope both the kids feel better soon x
Hi there. My son (now 1) has just a couple of days ago had absolutely appalling nappy rash due to a prolonged tummy bug - definitely the worst it has ever been by a long way. It came on very fast and our usual cream wasn't doing anything (the eco nature baby range or whatever it's called). I was recommended to use a German brand called Weleda so I bought their nappy change cream, applied it to his botty once it was totally dry and it more or less cleared up (or to a manageable level) with one application. It seemed very thick and soothing, and a more natural alternative to some of the more 'medical' creams... Might be worth a try? I was told, but don't know for a fact, that the health food shop on Lship Lane sells it. I got mine from Waitrose though.. Hope this helps!

Oh no, SG88, hang in there! :-) We had a sim problem with Little Saff around the same age. I wonder if it is something developmental like pH change related to growth of the GI tract...? Warm, dry air helped to clear up her rash. If your LO doesn't mind the sound, a hair dryer on low-low setting can get the skin really warm and dry before you apply nappy cream.

Also Little Saff found a bath very soothing. Do you have a Tummy Tub? The Tummy Tub made bathing Little Saff safe and easy even by myself. I think you can order them from NCT/Mothercare websites.

xx

If it isn't going with any of the other suggestions you might need to go to the GP and get a prescription as it might be a thrush. My little girl had a terrible nappy rash and despite trying everything including metanium, welada, sudocream etc. it would not clear. She also hated having a bare bum as she was scooting around on our wooden floors. Eventually we went to the GP were given a prescription and within 3 days it was almost better. You then have to keep using it for some time to ensure the infection doesn't return.

They do sell Welada at Health Matters. Good luck it's not nice, hope it clears quickly.

I would try switching nappy brands too. In my son's case, Huggies were a real problem but Pampers were fine (others have found the reverse).

Also, don't think anyone suggested oats in the bath yet? This made a huge difference for us. Put a cup of porridge oats in a muslin or sock, tie to close, and squish under running water until bath is cloudy. This always helps us get past a flare up of excema or nappy rash.

Agree that the Weleda cream is lovely!

And also agree that if none of this works, it could well be thrush.

Gp has prescribed an anti fungal and Metanium hoping they will help his poor bum looks like it has had a layer of skin stripped off (which in fact is what has happened I think). GP was brilliant not only saw the baby with emergency appointment but also my mum who is only visiting the UK

sounds terrible

we too have had an awful run of nappy rash post norovirus induced diarrhea

We found that all the different creams etc didn't beat nappy free time.

even just for 30 mins a day - it totally does the trick

we rolled up the rug in the sitting room and let him have 30 mins before bathtime running around and the next day it was all gone. The creams didn't seem to do anything much in comparison

keep kitchen roll and antibacterial spray to hand during nappy free time obv

We use Nature Baby nappies. I can recommend on basis that neither of my children have had anything ever near approaching nappy rash (and I am quite lazy about changing nappies). Of course, may just be that we have been lucky, but I'd say this brand is worth a go.

Our new baby had thrush when she was about a week old(perhaps from antibiotics when in hospital) and was obviously in pain, so got her checked out at the GP. Looked like nappy rash but more swollen/generally red.

None of the over-the-counter creams will sort thrush out, GP prescribed Timodine cream, fantastic stuff!

    • There's probably a bigger discussion on why we celebrate Christmas (pagan/religious festival) and why everything has to shut down.  I've enjoyed Xmas days in Spain, Mexico and France where some businesses and restaurants are open, and in a number of non-Christrian countries.  In both sets of occasions it has been festive, but not over the top and the Spanish seem to have a more relaxed attitude in a country where the church is probably more important than the UK.  A Lounge conversation.  I'll no doubt be popping into the Forest Hill Road supermarket on Xmas day for things we have forgotten, with many others in a similar situation who grew up in the Christian faith (I've long since been an atheist).
    • Would anyone have ends of balls of wool, any colour, to mend an old blanket? Any colour? With thanks Mila
    • I’m not a Gail’s fan but there’s no reason a business shouldn’t open on Christmas Day. However, nobody should be compelled to work the day which, given the widespread coverage of Gail’s questionable employment practices, has to be a possibility here.  The only business I ever use on the 25th is maybe a pub and that’s a rarity these days but buses running would be very welcome for visiting etc. But the swings in the park should definitely remain chained up. Are parks even open on Christmas Day?
    • To be honest, pal, it's not good being a fan of a local business and then not go there. One on hand, the barber shop literally next door to Romeo Jones started serving coffee. The Crown and Greyhound and Rocca serve coffee. Redemption Coffee opened up not far away, and then also Megan's next door to that. DVillage was serving coffee (but wasn't very popular), as was Au Ciel (which is). Maybe also Heritage Cheese, I don't know. There's also Flotsam and Jetsam doing coffee and sandwiches at Dulwich Picture Gallery in the other direction. The whole of Dulwich Village serves coffee. And yet on the other hand, there are enough punters to support all good coffee shops. With the exception of Rocca and Megan's (which are both big spaces) and C&G (which does coffee like everything else - slow and with bad service), all these places regularly get queues out the door. Gail's often has big queues and yet very few people crossed the street to Romeo Jones (which was much better)... Half the staff at Gail's are perfectly fine and efficient. The other half are pretty offhand and rude. It's certainly not welcoming or friendly service. But they're certainly hard working, and no doubt raking the money in for Luke Johnson...
