Dyson Dave
Went to the recycling centre just off the OKR twice in the last few days. There was a sign at the entrance saying "No Vans" plus a member of staff asked for ID in the form of a bank statement or some other official document proving residency in Southwark. Can't help but draw the conclusion that the recent spate of fly-tipping is a direct result of Southwark's stricter policy on using this facility. Jules-and-Boo
what's wrong with asking for proof of residency? If you're a business then you need to pay for disposal. It's quite simple. Jeremy
Council tips (sorry, recycling centres) have been fussy about vans for as long as I can remember. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/148307-penny-wise/#findComment-1122587 Share on other sites
BigED
Southwark used to allow vans. If it was a commercial van then you'd have to go to a commercial waste disposal site. But if it was a hire van they would ask for ID/address (driving licence or similar) and check what you were dumping to satisfy themselves it wasn't commercial waste.Lambeth sites have had (and enforced) a NO VANS rule for at least a couple of years. Not sure about Lewisham, but they are stricter than Southwark about what they will take (no rubble, no garden soil/stones).If you want to get rid of household or garden waste, use a car.The increase in fly tipping started with the introduction of a hefty charge for bulk waste. Every further restriction on getting rid of waste results in greater temptation for people to dump it illegally. And everybody ends up paying for it that way (unless it ends up on private property and then it is the hapless owner who gets stung). KidKruger
I'm quite impressed with the facility at OKR, good bunch of guys running it - you need proof of ID as it's a Southwark residents' service. If they didn't check, they could be receiving trade and other areas' junk. Sue
But they do allow vans. You have to register it in advance and you are only allowed four van loads a year.It was in a council leaflet about recycling I got through my door this morning.Unless I've misremembered. Can't be bothered to fish the leaflet out of my recycling bin :)) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/148307-penny-wise/#findComment-1122793 Share on other sites
