Any one with an eye for lighting/design - stuck for ideas...

Recommended Posts

Our much beloved, kind of chandelier, light has finally died. It's always looked great but it's been repaired umpteen times and the structure is no longer safe. It's about 1m wide and was the first thing we bought for our house when we moved to ED 10 years ago.

Anyway, I'm trying to find a new light that does the same thing. It doesn't have to look like the old one at all - but needs to be big, bit like a chandelier, needs to light up the dining table which is underneath,be a feature in the room. Looks good in a modern house but isn't uber trendy.

I'm not thinking Elle Decoration prices but would pay ?250 for something I'll keep for another 10 years.

And I'm really, really struggling - and getting more annoyed as time goes on that we don't have a working light - so am turning to the crowd wisdom of the EDF. Any design or lighting nuts out there that have any ideas?

I love that - though it might be a bit too industrial in a modern (largely featureless) room??? Will take a look at the rest of that site too - really liking this:

Thanks

Friends have got this in their entrance hall, shadowtastic...http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/lighting/ceiling-lights/ikea-ps-maskros-pendant-lamp-art-80146249/

Over your budget but this light looks amazing in the right setting... https://www.google.co.uk/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=moooi+random+light

RD - that is amazing, thanks. Knew I would get some good ideas on here - feeling a bit more positive about the whole thing.

RPC - Graham and Green. Good for mid range stuff and I guess it's lasted a fair while (would have likely lasted longer if we hadn't moved out for two sets of underpinning work), it never really recovered from the last dint in storage.

Mrs Robinson had this Claire Norcross Aperture light shade for sale recently, she designed it originally for Habitat. According to her website it's still available at John Lewis and some independent shops. Size wise not as big as the Ikea shade, but a line of 2-3 smaller shades can look good over a rectangular table...http://www.clairenorcross.co.uk/

We have three simple pendants from Urban Cottage Industries (http://www.urbancottageindustries.com/made-for-you/simple-pendant-lights) with big squirrel cage bulbs in them. They're each of slightly different lengths so they spiral down towards the table. Simple and really effective.

If you just buy a new fitting and bulb, you could make a lovely one off shade from an old one and some galvanised mesh and attach flora and fauna to it. You can cut birds or butterflies from some wallpaper? I made one for an arty project years ago, and then Sarah Moore did it with moths on her programme the other day!!! (Grrs) I made another one with old costume jewellery that caught the light, one with dragonflies etc ....

I do like the ikea ones shown above though.

    • Real shame they went under. We have a rectangular table (that we are keeping) which is great. I would set some ebay search alerts if you haven't done so already.

    • If this is approved BT will probably apply to remove the phone box. These cost far more than they earn and are very vulnerable to vandelism. The old phone boxes are not ideal to become WiFi hubs, and will need the same level of engineering work to convert (they will be connected over copper). And they don't offer the advertising opportunity which pays for the free WiFi.
