i don't think it's even a political/anti-capitalist argument (what is more capitalist than small independent businesses, after all), it's just a question of style. Chains just have a rubbishy feel to them. Even if GBK donated all its profits to Amnesty International and gave its employees three years' paid maternity leave, it would still just be a bit rubbish.

There is definitely a sliding scale - i was mortified when Cafe Nero moved in, but I remained thankful that at least it wasn't a Pret or a Starbucks. Strada is just on the edge, I think. But the Sea Cow is fine, as would be a Bodean's. These opinions are based purely on my own level of snobbery.

(The worst are the chains that try to emulate an "independent" atmosphere - at least Favourite Chicken et al are honest. I hate being aggressively marketed to - I have more respect for a place that says, this is what we do, if you like it, great, if not, go somewhere else.)

And on a community level, variety is nice for its own sake - no need for us to become a mini-Clapham.

    • That is almost too ridiculous to answer but I'll take the bait. You are comparing a national charity with one branch of a small charity. Cats Protection has around 34 dedicated rehoming centres. CHAT has two, Lewisham & Canning Town and a sanctuary in Sussex. So if Cats Protection have homed 34,000 cats, thats an average of 1000 per branch. From memory this years total so far for Lewisham CHAT was over 980. I saw a few homed this weekend so we may well reach 1000 for this year. The same as Cats Protection. No need for head scratching.
    • Actually, if it was factory fitted then it's location would be documented. It's the fact that it can be fitted in different places which means that it's difficult for thieves to locate.
    • OK, good suggestion and it appears that the after-market price is about £260. But if that that was fitted ex-factory then the cost would be substantially less and certainly a small fraction of the price of a high-end car.
