My small potted Bay Tree has started to look very Sad.

The leave are turning brown and are crispy dry but not falling off the tree.

There appears to be new leave coming but can I still use the brown ones in cooking ?

I have been watering the plant but not over watering.

How can I rescue my Bay Tree which I bought last year.

Should I remove the brown leaves. Will that allow the new leaves to grow.

They are very tiny at the moment.

Any help much appreciated. My tree was quite expensive. ?45.00

The brown leaves will have no flavour left in them unfortunately, it'll just amount to putting dead leaves in your cooking. Green-fingered Mrs H says compost loses its nutritional value over time so you should repot with fresh compost every spring if possible. Brown leaves may indicate it needs a bit more water than it's getting, apparently, and yes they should be removed to make way for new growth.

Yes. That's what I plan to do. Pot size restricted to size of planter but I'll give a go.

Also give it a feed with edible plant feeder

Many Thanks

Seventeen years ago moved into a house with a bay tree at the bottom of the garden. It was thirty feet tall three years ago, when we realised that the neighbours felt as if they were enduring a total eclipse of the sun. So down it came. I miss it, but the back garden is the better for it... Anyhow: Put it in dirt, not in a pot or planter, and let it take off!

This is my garden I have a small strip either side of my garden.

Planting out is not an option.

    • The editing was clumsy and made it look like he said something specific, that he did not. That is obviously wrong, and the BBC have apologised and people have lost their jobs as a result. That said, the overall impression - that Trump repeatedly stated (and still does) that the election had been stolen, that he encouraged his supporters to march on the Capitol, that he repeatedly called for people to fight - in short that he inspired a violent insurrection - is entirely true.  Trump used the word 'fight' 20 times. Whilst his speech was going on, his supporters chanted "Take the Capitol", "Invade the Capitol", "Storm the Capitol" and "Fight for Trump" The documentary generally, was not misleading. The real scandal is that Trump wasn't tried and ended up back in power. I do think that we need to stop normalising Trump. He has a criminal history and is openly corrupt. He has shown himself to be a threat to democracy. The US right and their tech billionaire allies are having an malign impact on UK politics and culture, interfering both directly and indirectly, in ways that we should be doing more to challenge.
    • @beansprout I don't think Gails has closed, Do you mean Megans? I've never seen waiters at Gails. If you do mean Megans unfortunately I believe its just closed for refurbishment to be relaunched as some similarly awful 'concept'
    • Staff have changed and owner now taking a more active role….she is such a nice+lady so I encourage you to try again . I am all for supporting local business and personally very glad after appalling service earlier this year Gail’s has closed.. Change of staff and chefs were unreal.. In one month alone must have had at least 4 new chefs plus god knows how many waiters/ waitresses.. when Ai saw that happening, new it was gonna be down hill all the way.
