I love cooking, I love reading cookery books and I collect them wherever I go. Haven't counted them, they are all like old familiar friends in some way. Although I don't strictly follow recipes and make up my own.

Elizabeth David is a lovely food writer esp on Meditteranean and French food. Weirdly, I hated that Simon Hopkinson book that came out a few years ago that 'everyone' was raving about (Roast chicken and other stories. Loada pants.)

I agree that there's a load of cr@p cookery programmes too but you cannot diss the wonderful Michel Roux jnr, oh no.

PS Mick Mac - this is your best thread yet, thanks ever so much.

I like cookery books with pretty pictures in them. Nice to browse through when you are sitting on the sofa with a pre-dinner beer, contemplating what to make. Reading books in the kitchen though just doesn't equate so it looks like beans on toast again!

Are you two kidding me? A great book, and a nicer man you'll not meet. Pah.

Narnia, I'm quite envious of your recipe book: my mum used to have an excellent collection of 1970s Good Housekeeping recipe magazines and Robert Carriers, whence came the inspiration for many a black forest coupe, coronation chicken or tournedo rossini. But alas they are no more.

And Quids, the Nigella thing is simple, surely - she looks filthy.

    • Unless you are watching it 24x7 then its hard to qualify that its not being used. Unless you are a business overlooking it of course. Personally I am reassured we still have phone boxes as they provide a valuable emergency use. If you are mugged for you phone, you can call 999 from them, if your house or business is on fire and you run out without a phone you can dial 999 from them. Some people don't have a mobile so its potentially reassuring for them knowing they can call someone if they feel unwell whilst out.  Just because some people don't see value in an object, doesn't mean others don't.
    • Hardly a non-story @malumbu still one of the lead stories on the BBC.....you clearly don't understand when to serve humble pie! 😉  https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cvgk40l8jm7o   Absolutely. It's a disaster. And for this government, who were happy to tell us they had 14 years to prepare to lead, it has been one self-inflicted disaster after another since they took over. To be honest the signs were there when they were in opposition but I think we all gave them the benefit of the doubt as they weren't the Tories and now they have the reigns the additional scrutiny that brings is tripping them up.
    • I don't think I've ever seen it used other than for gluing advertising on it. It's definitely not a priority but these things typically get ignored and become part of the furniture (so to speak).  There is a beautiful old red box near Upland Rd. I miss old red boxes... 😞 Anyway I'll have a dig around and see if anything can be done.
    • £30-40 for M&S Christmas food for two seems very low! And only £60 for food and drink for 8-10 people?  We have had M&S food at Christmas in the past, and it came to a lot more than that. I suppose it depends exactly what you are buying. We left it late to book a Christmas Day meal out last year, so there weren't many options left.  The Cherry Tree menu looked very nice. That was our first mistake. We also overlooked the fact that it was a Young's pub, with all that implies about the food. That was our second mistake. We don't have shedloads of money. We  took the view that we deserved a nice meal  out after working bloody hard all year. So it was doubly disappointing to basically waste a lot of money which could have been very much better  spent elsewhere.
