Hi,

Im a mum of three living in Borough. My eldest is 3 and youngest is 6 weeks. I was lucky enough to be offered a nursery place (full time) for my son at an excellent school in the area. I formally accepted the offer. during my pregnancy with the youngest there were complecations so decided to go back to Australia to have the baby. We wrote to the school and informed them that my son would have to start three weeks late. We didnt hear back from the school and thus assumed that this would be fine. My son was due to start school a few days ago. We dressed him in the uniform and took him to school. He was really excited. On arrival after I informed the office staff that it was my sons first day the Head approached me and said that the place had been given to someone else and that we had been informed of this! She said that she had written to me but I had definately not received any letter. When I asked for a copy of the letter I was informed that she did not have time as she had another parent to see. All this went on in the school hall for all to hear. I was crying and my little one was upset as we had been talking about him starting school for 3 months!

Basically I wanted to know if the school is legally able to do this.

thanks for your time

Monique

I'm so sorry that you've gone through this. I went through something a little similar with my first as the nursery I had lined up went into liquidation 2 weeks before i went back to work (a new job) and a week before she was due to start. It's completely horrid and turns your life upside down.

It sounds incredibly out of order that they didn't give you the consideration of taking you into a quiet part (??) of the nursery to discuss this.

I agree, ask the Head for an appointment, if you don't feel you've been given due courtesy after this, then you can talk to Ofsted. Not a particularly nice way to go - but they are the regulating body.

On another note - our nursery is wonderful and I think they may have places. Not sure which area you need/want. But PM me if you are interested. I promise the Head will be lovely to you - whatever you decide.

It may have been an idea to have rung the nursery to check that they had recieved your letter. Although I know Hindsight is a great thing.

have you thought about looking for another nursery? annoying, but if the head is going to act so unprofessionally I would consider another option.

    • There’s a line of stationary buses with hazards on ,from East Dulwich Grove to  Goose Green roundabout blocking traffic so it has to use the wrong lane at the zebra to cross the roundabout. No idea why.

    • Reviving this to say that Palais is now up and running.  We went to a night there yesterday.  It is a first floor bar with cocktails and space for a DJ.  That I think is intended to be a quieter space for an older/more chilled crowd.  There is also a basement club space that can hold 500, it has an amazing sound system. The communal areas are still a bit rough and ready, they still need to do some replastering and painting on the stairways and there is currently no functioning lift.   But generally it was well run and thoughtfully restored. It was good to see the space back in use and it feels like a good addition  to that end of Peckham. Interestingly, showing a shift in night time cultures, there were signs about not using mobile phones and everyone had to get a blocking  sticker put on their phone camera lens before they were allowed in.
    • Great shout. They do need the extra fat when it’s winter, but don’t use fat balls from April as they are dangerous for nestlings as the babies can choke on lumps of the fat. When it gets milder switch to suet pellets as they are harder and don’t melt (the grease is bad for feathers.
