  1. Thanks for the info Saffron. My niece contracted TB at the age of 10 likely from contact with children at her primary school in SE4 (located in a middle-class owner occupied area). She had never left London, albeit for a trip to the seaside, and the GP could not explain how she managed to contract it. She didn't live in poverty and was a girl who generally liked to keep herself clean and washed her hands before every meal. That was 10 years ago but I can't see how conditions are any more improved now.
  2. My children had BCGs at 2 weeks and 14 months. They are now adults and do not have scars. I would recommend BCGs at an early age if you want to avoid a scar later. The injection is done differently.
  3. If you think about it compost is essentially rotting material...which is still rotting. Safer to get a bag of top soil which is different to compost. (I'm a qualified Early Years teacher) Also try soap flakes in warm water with whisks...they absolutely love all the bubbles they make.
  4. Hi I had a look at your video and it's simple and colourful so would be attractive to toddlers. However as a qualified teacher I would say that learning grapheme-phoneme correspondence at this age is not appropriate. Very young children need lots of experience of exploring and playing with sounds, such as with nursery songs, sound discrimination, rhyme and alliteration. Your video jumps a very important step in the phonics program and is perhaps why you cannot find videos for toddlers on YouTube like this. Have a look at Phase 1 of the government's Letter and Sounds document for the 6 strands appropriate for toddlers. However, there is hardly any media on teaching phase 1 and I'm sure would be a much more profitable venture for you as every nursery in the country is a potential customer. You are welcome to PM me if you would like more information.
  5. I teach in Year 1 but the same would apply to Reception at my school. We give a new book every week because that's all we can manage in the timeframe as the admin takes up more time than we can spare for it. Your teacher is doing well if she can find time to write a comment. However we also have an online book club where the children work through an unlimited amount of books. They can listen to phonics sounds appropriate to the book and answer questions to check their comprehension. We ask parents to use it daily but they rarely do and we recognise it is a challenge in busy family lives. What is really crucial, though, is your children regularly hears stories being read to them. A bedtime routine that ends with a story is well worth building into day.
  6. I have a child at a grammar school and he reports that most of his top maths set still have to have a tutor even at gcse. So it seems that if you start with a tutor you have to keep paying to keep up.
  7. You can buy cheap wooden letters from amazon which u can do loads with such as draw around, trace fingers around the shape, hide in sand or around the room for treasure hunt, put in envelopes for a posting activity, line them up in order, make the childs name or other words, press into wet sand...the possibilities are endless. However at 3 the focus should be on hearing the sounds rather than linking the sounds to letters. So just makng up silly sounds is a good start.
  8. There seems very little in it this year; perhaps because BTech qualifications no longer count towards 5 GCSES's incl. maths & English.??? Who knows! Harris Crystal Palace 77% Charter 77% Kingsdale 76% Sydenham Girls 71% Harris Boys East Dulwich 70% Prendergast Hilly Fields 70% Deptford Green 70% Aske's New Cross (Haberdasher) 70% Bonus Pastor 67%
  9. I heard this second hand so not sure how true it is but it is very funny if it is because it just sums up how arrogant they are. At Harris CP they have a receptionist who is extremely rude. A parent was at reception when the receptionist spotted a man walking about outside in the school grounds. She then asked a colleague 'how did he get in? Go and get rid of that dirty old man'. It turned out to be Lord Harris .
  10. My son had constipation when he turned 18 months. The doctor said it was from having a cows milk intolerance. He was on 20ml of lactolose and 10ml of senna . He had half a bottle of prune juice twice a day and that lasted two years. I saw a private consultant who said that he probably had internal fissures that were making him feel uncomfortable and I was also messing about with his diet and medication which wasnt helping him. She pointed out that lactolose isnt absorbed by the gut so to keep giving it with lots of fluids. My son one day sat on the potty and happened to do a poo. I think because of the seating position it helps it come out easier. I know yours is v young but it might be worth trying the potty if he is making a fuss. It was very stressful so I feel your worry. Its not pleasant but it does get better over time.
  11. Why don't you just ask him? He might hate dinosaurs. If he's not sure then you could take him to Hamleys or other toy shop as a treat and let him choose something there. He will be more likely to play with it then.
  12. You could try 'deep root killer'. It is so good it even killed japanese knotweed that sprouted in my garden. Two years later it has not grown back.
  13. Get a least 5 quotes as they vary widly. Check they offer a guarantee and that it is insurance backed.

    Steep garden

I've learnt never to use a builder for gardens. Always get a gardener or landscape builder otherwise you end up with straight red brick walls and no character. They probably could redestribute the soil as part of the design rather than get rid as that is cistly.
  15. The problem is not so much the friends issue as they don't take long if they have good social skills. The problem is how much learning they miss and how they then feel when everyone knows what is going on and they don't. I have a couple of jan starts in my class and they were happy at first but then they realised that they can't do the stuff the rest can and their morale has slumped. And its simple things like not knowing how to use the number fans, which are things you can't really teach at home, as unless you teach you wouldn't know about those things. If your child is very able they may cope well but please don't underestimate how much learning takes place in the autumn term. HTH
  16. I would agree with above about having a pair. A couple rather than two males/females as they fight. Males are also more docile about being held. We trained our rabbits to toilet in a litter tray so only the tray needed cleaning out and not the rest of the hutch. The litter tray needs cleaning out daily though to prevent fly strike which is a horrible disease where the fly's larvae eats the rabbttits insides until it passes away. We never experienced any problems with eyes, etc and were very healthy having a run around the garden daily. Feed them lots of straw as the pellets are only a supplement and not the main food. Also hutch needs to be away from direct sun as their water will boil up and so will they. All our rabbits have had amazing characters and are funny to watch leaping about. To avoid gets scratchers/biters you need to get the right breed, have them neutered and get some they have been handled well. They can turn nasty if ch are not kind to them. HTH
  17. but your last > sentence was pretty rude, to say the least. Well good. My post was rather tongue in cheek but for teachers who work 7/11 for your children (and yes I arrive at work at 7 and still going at 10p.m sometimes only with a 10 minute break - in fact I've just finished my planning tonight, yes Saturday night at 11) it's demoralising that parents begrudge the time to cut out what could be perhaps just a paper mask for a once a year event and yet find the time to complain about it. So please have a heart and lay off the complaints about WBD.
  18. We celebrated WBD at our school and all the teachers dressed up too and acted out a chosen book in assembly. The children were very excited and learnt a great deal from the experience. We chose a story with lots of different characters so parents wouldn't find it difficult to find something suitable at the back of the wardrobe. Our WBD took lots of planning and hard work (and we were exhausted) so it's sad to read this thread and hear parents find it too much trouble when schools are working hard to promote literacy and a love of books. They are your kids after all.
  19. Beware of buying property on that Catford Greyhound site. When i saw the plans a few years ago at a sham of a public consultation there was a circular thing on the plan and the rep refused to tell me what it was. I only asked out of interest but his refusal to tell me was very suspicious and I never found out. They also wouldn't tell me how many car park spaces they planned - obviously not enough. Catford property is historically cheap because of the lack of decent schools and the town centre has drunks and drug dealers ever present.
  20. GinaG3 Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > We cant even do that. I've checked everything. > Based on income we could only get a loan of 42,000 > maximum. That would mean buying at 62,000 or part > buying, even then its more than we can afford with > shared ownership. I wouldn't recommend shared-ownership - it's a con. The only people who benefit are the Housing Associations. Someone told me that before I bought my shared-ownership 20 years ago and I didn't listen but they were right.
  21. I had a 'squirrel' in my attic which I failed to catch for many years using bait and a squirrel trap. We blocked up the holes in the roof and it bit its way back in. Then we decided to put a video camera in the attic and we found out it was a huge rat which sat for 20 minutes eating the poison and came back each day to eat some more and wouldn't die! The pest control people from the council refused to believe us that it was a rat until I showed them the video. It took ages for us to catch it but we used a gadget that electrocutes them instantly. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Pest-Stop-PSERK-Electronic-Rat-Killer/dp/B000FII3YW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1392629709&sr=8-1&keywords=rat+killer We had to move the gadget around a bit and put peanut butter trails in and upto it. Once we caught it we were not bothered for 6 months but when it got colder again another one appeared which the gadget killed. Then another one appeared, killed that, and then another. We then begun to understand the term 'rat run' because we realised our house was on one and nothing could stop new ones coming. The night before we moved we heard the scuffling of tiny feet above our heads again and left it with the new owners. I would recommend you make sure it really is a squirrel first so you can get the appropriate treatment.
  22. Hi ad2000, I'm quite shocked the school hasn't really taken up this aspect of the complaint either. All I've had is a call back saying they looked at three children's books and everything is fine. HOWEVER my intelligent child thought to ask every member of that class and each one has said they have been in possession of their book for over a week and no one has asked to see it. So we asked which children's books they have a looked at as my child wants to check with them. Consequently, I now have a 'promise' of a meeting for next term with the deputy (no reply from the Head). And yes whether qualified or unqualified no one should work in a school if they can't speak and write English clearly. Mr Gove has tightened the rules on the English tests for qualified Teachers but has let anyone in the back door if they are an academy.
  23. Finally having a dialogue with the school (after writing e-mails to external bodies and copying them in - so thanks EDF for that) but they are denying everything of course.
  24. Finally got a phone call back today after lots of chasing today. Deputy rang and said he would have a look at the children's books and that's it(still no response from my e-mails to Head). I won't hold my breath it being so close to half-term.
  25. Well yes that's a good idea about reporting to OFSTED as the shouting, calling them stupid and idiots and shoving them in between the filing cabinet to face the wall would fall under child protection. The media would love it as I have copies of his badly prepared powerpoints, and notes that do not have full stops, capital letters or English grammar. However, when I have complained about teachers on two previous occasions my child has been bullied by them so I need to tread carefully as my child will just clam up and deny everything.
