  1. Nivia suncream was recommended by my dermatology consultant and I have used it for many years even though I am very sensitive to most things. It also has a very high UVA rating.
  2. well I did research some of the postings and thought it odd that some members seem to join the forum just to recommend you. And no one else has replied to my post, so what am I to think??
  3. I went to County Jewellers 20 years ago for an engagement ring and I went back recently for another ring and they are still there. I also used the Wedding Ring shop who have also been there over 20 years - just across the road from each other.
  4. Is there any genuine posters who have actually used RPS fireplaces, or is it all propaganda postings on this forum by their own people?

  6. Established middle class! Not bad for the daughter of a dyslexic single-parent hairdresser. Although mother did come out as Procariat - even 100K+ in the bank, visiting stately homes and knowing a teacher couldn't move her up.
  7. Well I wouldn't buy a refurbished when for ?29 more I could buy a new one. I would go for the John Lewis as the extra years warranty is worth it.
  8. I would recommend Joanne at the sunflower centre, Tressillian Road, Brockley
  9. I haven't had chance to read the previous emails but you may want to consider this. Last year I had a child in my class who started in year one and skipped reception. He was really unhappy because everyone else had already made friends and there was quite a lot of learning he had missed and was playing catch-up the whole time. He was a very able child but he was constantly demoralised because he didn't know and couldn't do what the other children had already learnt and practised in Reception. Reception is largely play-based and is the stepping-stone to formal learning so skipping it, I think, just makes the step bigger. HTH
  10. Wilsons Wallington and Sutton can all be accessed via Sydenham/Forest Hill/Honor Oak line. Get off at Waddon for Wilsons, next stop Wallington for Wallington Boys and next stop Sutton for Sutton. There's a growing group of boys on the line for those schools so your child would't be going it alone. It's approx 30 minute train journey and I have one at a grammar and others at a local comp and they all leave and return more or less at the same time. There's very little extra travel time in it.
  11. Hollandforlife Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > I have to say I think this year's results have > already been telling...why are people dismissive > of this? It's not about being dismissive, you just can't look at the results in isolation. There are too many variables here to make your assertions without any further evidence. Actually, according to the DfE website, this year's A*-C GCSE result (without maths/English) for Kingsdale is 65%, which is similar to previous years. I personally can't see how they could have maintained this statistic, under intense examboard scrutiny, if all their previous results were faked. It suggests the drop is directly due to either maths or English - and there has been major problems with English GCSE in 2012.

Quoting directly from an official report vs gossip/conjecture is hardly defending but putting the official line across. I have no connection with the school so I have no agenda. However, since Cora, who perhaps has put her child's name down for the school and is understandably concerned, has asked for some background on the results, it is not helpful to her to offer unsubstantiated explanations. It's next year's results that will be telling.

What's that got to do with last year's students? Anyway, schools up and down the country have been doing this for ages. There was an article in TES magazine recently about it and how the government are planning to have one exam board per subject to stamp it out.
  14. Ofsted has graded Kingsdale as a 'good' school. This is the official judgement. Why anyone would be 'pleased' that children didn't get the GCSE's that they could have got to prove other schools are better is beyond me.
  15. Hi Cora, I've noticed that lots of schools have very dodgy Value Added Measures this year in comparison to previous years, probably due to the English GCSE issue, so I don't consider VAMs as very reliable for 2013. The very recent Kingsdale Ofsted report (which are now much more harsher/robust inspections since Sep 2012) attempts to explain the dip, which seems to suggest that the problems they had with staff last year adversely affected 2012's results. Having to change children's GCSE courses midflow will really mess up any school's results. Askes admitted having a similar (but less public) issue a few years ago when their results took a nosedive when they lost a whole department of teachers. However, Ofsted seem to be satisfied eveything is back on track: "The school leadership team had to deal with some exceptionally challenging issues in the last academic year. In tackling these issues robustly, bold decisions were made to switch the courses being followed by some Year 11 students. In addition, circumstances led to a significant reduction in the amount of additional support and revision sessions that had, in the past, taken place beyond the school day. This change, plus staff absence in some key subjects, such as science, led to a significant dip in Year 11 students?? attainment and achievement in 2012. This was particularly the case for boys. ?? During this inspection, all groups of students were making good progress in the large majority of lessons and outstanding progress in some lessons. Changes to the courses available made last year are now fully in place and beginning to have a positive impact on students?? progress. Issues that led to a reduction in the range of support and revision sessions have also been resolved. As a result, the progress made by all students, including boys, has now returned to the good levels seen in the past and attainment is rising rapidly across the school, particularly in English, mathematics and science."
  16. I started off by agreeing that they would wipe first then I would finish the job. Then one day I would walk away and leave them and pretend to be busy doing something. If they called me I would say I was coming. In the end they got fed up waiting and did it themselves. Having an attractive wipe box also helped.

As others have said I would play them at their own game and show your eldest in the bible where it says the 'sun shines on everyone good and bad' and so what she is saying is not what 'God' says about it anyway whether he is real or not. Children are very good at seeing through things like that but they are also entitled to hearing other people's opinions on such issues. Whatever you say will always hold more weight so make sure you just reinforce your ideas. If you try and shut up other ideas it may make your children more interested in them.
  18. I haven't read the other posts but there is a natural remedy that I have tried and recommended to others and it has worked every time. Buy pure Evening Primrose capsules (it has to be the capsules and good quality ones). Break it open and rub it on the skin. It was so effective on one of my children that you could see a line of eczema where I had missed rubbing it in. It takes a few weeks or so to work but perhaps you could try it on a little patch to see if it works for you or not.
  19. It is possible they are doing it as part of their Citizenship GCSE (my son is doing this at the moment) but they are told not to go door to door. However, part of the project is for them to do it all themselves without any adult support so they may have taken it upon themselves to do this because they didn't have any other ideas. So it doesn't mean they were scamming for money but it is better we don't encourage them by giving them money as you never know whose door they will knock on next.
  20. Childminders are no longer required to have written policies so they might not have any. However, they should be able to give you verbal policies of relevant issues.
  21. It is best to visit the childminder when other children are there as it can answer many questions. Ask to see the registration certificate and check the oftsed report and that should answer lots of questions without having to ask them as the registration process will check CRBs and expect first aid and other training to be completed. That is all done for you. I would be inclined to ask the childminder to describe what her typical day is like and then you will know whether your child will be able to cope/fit in with that and you are happy for your child to have that routine. Ask to see a sample of the contract so you check the other stuff people have mentioned above. If they are not registered then you would be breaking the law using them and it is at your own risk that the person is suitable.
  22. Only a suggestion but what about putting the cot mattress by the gate and each night moving it an inch away until you finally have her where you want her. At least she won't be sleeping directly on the floor.
  23. Yes the blending comes later but they find blending very tricky if they have learnt to say their phonemes (sounds) wrong. I have some children in my class at the moment who are having to relearn most of their phonemes and it's much harder when the concrete has already set!!
