Hi Mary123,

I live in SE22 and I bought a newish car last year. My Insurance company of 15 years put my premium up by more than 60%. Upon renewal I did an online search as advised and got full comp, protected no claims and legal cover (so not a slimmed down policy) for less than half my old company's quote.

I have literally just renewed it since it is now 10% lower than last year. I did fear that it would be hiked upon renewal and also due to the government's increase in

insurance tax so was pleased with the drop. It really pays to shop around and not stay with an old company at renewal. They have no customer loyalty so neither should you.

Good luck with your search.

I went with QuotemeHappy which is the online version of Aviva. All done online unless you need to make a claim which I quite like. I used to be with Elephant.

I also found the same problem with house insurance. My mother had been with Saga for several years having been wooed by a very good rate of about ?250 a year for full cover house contents and property. A few years later it had reached ?750 a year for the same cover with no claims having been made. When I contacted them they couldn't explain why it had got so much but they would also not reduce it. I took out a new policy in my name, since I also live in the house as a carer, with Prudential (a well respected company I think) for their fullest cover for ?200 per year. It also meant I was a new policy holder so no discount applied which makes it even better as a deal. Shame on Saga and their treatment of old people.

Pretty much all insurance companies punish loyalty, just like energy suppliers, mobile providers etc, if you don't shop around they will hike up the rates year by year. Best rates reserved for new customers (or really stroppy existing ones they think they are going to lose).

I got about ?150 off my car insurance (with Admiral) this year by doing a quote online and challenging my current insurer to beat the best alternative.

The only thing I struggle to move is home insurance as lots of providers are convinced this area is a high subsidence area and either won't quote or quote silly rates. I even tried a specialist company recommended on here and found they tried to slap a ?40k excess on subsidence and hid it in the small print even though I had specifically said I wanted to make sure I was covered for that given how anxious the insurers seemed to be about it. However, even here I tend to whinge about the renewal quote most years and stop my insurer increasing the premium too much.

    • I’m not sure how many other people have experienced this; but both me and one of my friends have the same story. Around Crawthew Grove and Crystal Palace Road: I was followed by a large fox right on my heel. At first I didn’t notice because I had my headphones on, but then I noticed my shadow had an extra lump in it, funnily enough, it was a fox, very very close to my feet. Even if I sped up walking it just tried to get closer - it was quite frightening actually, it was quite clear that it wanted to nip me. I didn’t know what to do so, I started to reprimand the fox and walked slowly away from it, facing it - which it didn’t seem to like and backed off a bit. I then proceeded to speed-walk away.   Quite frankly, the whole situation was quite embarrassing and a little bit frightful as I’d never had a fox even come up to me. I’ve heard of particularly curious foxes that might come up to someone who beckons them, and maybe even bite that person, but I’ve never heard of a fox chasing someone. The amount of confidence that it had was incredible.    When it happened, I was on the way to see some friends, and once I had told one of them, she told me the same thing happened to her.  if anyone else knows anything about this bitey fox then let me know!
    • Another recommendation for Andy. I needed an old kitchen removed as an emergency. Andy came over quickly and did a fantastic job. I have used Andy a few times. He is punctual, helpful and always does an  excellent job.
