Sue
Every time I get my hair cut I get all embarrassed because I'm never sure whether to tip or not.And when I do, I get all embarrassed about actually giving the tip, unless I can leave it at the desk. And then I get embarrassed because I'm not sure whether I should also be tipping the person who washed my hair (where different).I did ask my hairdresser about it once, and then we both got all embarrassed. Just wondering what everybody else does. I stopped doing it, but now I'm embarrassed about that :)) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/166010-tipping/ Share on other sites
Nigello
Do what you want - but be prepared to feel awkward if it's not tipping. Be brave! Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/166010-tipping/#findComment-1172664 Share on other sites
KidKruger
I usually chuck a ?5er and have done for eternity, but given how cool they make my hair look they thoroughly deserve it. And I think the hair washery staff get a cut anyways. Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/166010-tipping/#findComment-1172667 Share on other sites

red devil
50p, a button you can't for the life of you work out where's it's from, and a couple of Polo mints, should suffice... ianr
Discuss it with them? Start off with a position paper perhaps, and take it from there. If you don't get close to agreement within a month or two, consider setting a deadline and default position. Robert Poste's Child
You don't have to tip if it's the proprietor who does your hair. The best advice I've had on tipping generally is to tip if you plan to go back. hammerman
I've just a week ago tipped a fiver for my daughter's haircut which I usually cut myself. She doesn't have a haircut that often so I didn't mind and she was pleased with it. Mick Mac
I tip my barber, as I think he's good, but also think he's underpriced, as are most local barbers, so I feel I'm rectifying that. BrandNewGuy
I tip my barber a straight 10% or whatever rounds up to the next pound. DulwichFox
Hair cut at my Barber ?14-16. Being of a certain age, I get charged ?8.00 but pay ?10.00 Foxy Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/166010-tipping/#findComment-1172839 Share on other sites
Ellem86
I have a hairdresser who does a good job on my hair and I always tip her but only because she undercharges. She charges ?35 for a weave (which is seriously undercharging given how good she is) so I tip her ?5. I do not tip when I go to my other more expensive hairdresser. KidKruger
The only exception I make regarding tipping is my shaving barber, who is Tamil and he/they do not have tipping as a habit. It's only a ?5er anyway and I only go when I've got a full beard on. I have tried to pay in the past, but he wouldn't let me.I stopped tipping when the prices went up a year or so back but now I feel I'm being mean, though he knows I'm not rolling in money (can probably tell by my threadbare clothes, anyway :)) ) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/166010-tipping/#findComment-1172879 Share on other sites
JohnL
I rarely tip in the UK unless I'm really impressed.Recently I've noticed I'm getting more freebies - even in the pub (the drinks on us once or twice)- it's a customers market. Jules-and-Boo
I assume tipping is an appreciation of good work. I've no qualms about not tipping for a bad haircut. In fact, they would know by then that I wasn't happy. But then, I wouldn't go back anyway. My girls had their haircut and I went to tip when I paid by card but was told they can't take tips on card. I was mortified as had no cash. I always give them a fiver or so. Keeps the good will running a bit smoothly if you're regulars. Ac couple of pounds is also fine. It's what you feel able to give and is not at all a fixed amount. Pugwash
if the part time girl washes I give her a ?1, the cutter ?2 but if I have lowlights (?35-?40) I give the hairdresser (the owner) ?5 - I usually get a mug of tea or coffee whilst I am there. JohnL
Sue Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> Crikey, what pub is that?!?!?!Not near here. Not sure it works like Prets free coffees though - you just wonder what their angle is :)My best tipping was in Egypt - I tipped all the boys behind the bar (I never saw a girl working) every day and they always served me first and made little remarks about what other holidaymakers were mean. (they really really tried hard though) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/166010-tipping/#findComment-1172997 Share on other sites
Siduhe
Same here - ?35 cut (best cut I have ever had for my hair - been going to see this hairdresser for several years) and ?5 tip which she splits if someone else washes my hair, not her.
