so Sean, is the game any good? I've only read average reviews which is shame 'cos the mock up costume they had in the window of game on oxford street kicked ass and gave me high hopes for this.

both Mockney and I have given this a fair old go (and then Halo 3 came out)

It's not perfect but it is very very good and has the best setting/atmosphere/feel of any game I've played. I would recommend it for sure..... it's just that gameplay wise it doesn't offer anything new (which is what most people have got upset about)

Will echo Sean's summary, atmosphere wise it's one of the best games I've watched; but it does have more in common with film than it does with game.

As an fps it's never challenging, and though they've tried to steer you toward creative combined use of the plasmids (left trigger, spells basically) and weapons (right trigger, usual fare), you generally just end up setting the baddies on fire then blasting them with a shotgun.

It's so beautifully rendered and the attention to detail is awesome. It makes a 1940s, art deco world existing under the ocean to a django reinhart soundtrack, utterly believable. Strong story well presented too.

If you've played the Biohocks (yep Sean, System Shocks) and Deus Ex you'll have an idea; it feels like the former and plays like the latter.

In terms of atmosphere, Eternal Darkness is the best I've played. It is genuinely creepy. Unlike the Resident Evil games which are all gore and action, this one actually spooked me a bit.

Oh, and did I mention I'd finished it 3 times? ;-)

I think I shall buy a new console after xmas... suggestions?

I old enough to be beyond any "my console is better than yours" arguments so hopefully my reco will be fairly objective

If I had to choose one, it would be the 360, purely on the strength of the catalogue of games. PS3 is embarrassing for it's dearth of unique quality software. The Wii I was impressed with but doesn't offer enough, on it's own, to warrant choosing above the others

I will echo sean's comments, not because we are one and the same person or anything, but the boy does talk sense alot.

You can 'borrow' my xbox for a while if you like, I've a fair old back catalogue of games that should keep you entertained for a while if you're not in a great rush to go next gen.

Halo 1 and Halo 2 of course!!

I just had a glowing review of the PS3 from a mate of mine yesterday. He said it was noticeably better then the 360 (which he also owns) but Seans's right, no really compelling games; well, Gran Turismo 4 could well be.

PGR4 (out today folks) looks like it is a lot more fun than GT5 will be - I'm fed up of that game getting ever prettier and ever more boring

I have vague memories filtering through of your husband showing me something terribly clever and cheeky with a DS, but the details somehow escape me today.

Any chance of some elaboration?
