Loft conversion question - raising roof height

Recommended Posts

Our neighbour recently did a loft conversion but wasn't allowed to raise the roof despite every house on the opposite Street having the roofline raised - as a result he had to lower the ceilings...

We are thinking about a loft conversion too but the thought of having to pull down all our ceilings really puts us off the idea and we will have to redecorate every room, new fitted cupboards, much more expensive and disruptive etc...

Does anyone have experience in persuading the council to see some logic and accept that the raised roofline has been done close proximity to our house (we can see it from our garden!) and that we don't live on a street with particularly uniform housing etc...

Is there anyway to do something that would convince them? E.g something of exceptional architecture (I'm clutching at straws!)

Thanks

If we're just talking about a few cm, I think some people just raise the roofline "unofficially", and pretend it was always like that. (I guess the thinking is along the lines of - 'the houses are all a bit different anyway, and never line up exactly').

Some of the loft conversion companies actually encourage it. It's pretty dodgy though.
