Many thanks for recent comments. Wandered down LL yesterday (Saturday) pm.

EDT - quite busy and noisy with large TV showing football ? so no thanks!

The Bishop ? lots of loud music

The Palmerston ? intimidated by the clinking of cutlery and the apparent hauteur of the staff

Meet and Liquor ? I?m much too old

Franklin?s ? nice reasonably priced pint of Guinness and glass of wine for ?er indoors. Room to sit and music pleasant and not obtrusive.

Can be busy with Big Games but much of the time TV sound is not on.

Just background music. and not in large bar to the left. and not always on in bar to the right.

I 100% agree with this. Loud bars on a Friday night when you might fancy a dance are one thing. Pubs, where you meet up.with groups of friends for a chinwag, are another. I don't meet in any of the pubs along the lane now as I just can't hear a bloody thing... It's a shame as I miss that lovely sound of lively chatter on a post-work evening. Would rather hear that than some crappy bass lines.

I tend to think that while the pubs in ED are all technically 'pubs', they are each catering to a different market.

The Bishop - basically more of a 'bar' with younger crowd

The Palmerston - effectively a restaurant. Wouldn't really choose it for a casual beer

Franklins - combination of pub / restaurant

EDT - more of a traditional all-round pub with relaxed atmosphere

The Lordship - kind of now a wedding venue as closed for functions most weekends

Great Exhibition - similar to EDT in my experience, although weekend DJ brings more of a Bishop-type vibe

As I get older I can't help noticing a lot of ageism going on. I don't mean any of the comments above, but that underlying, unspoken commercial assumption that everything - entertainment, fashion, even financial services - has to be for younger people first. There was a point in the early noughties when you couldn't go to any kind of event without it having DJs. My social life revolves around cafes these days.

Ah, come on, I'm ancient and I like it in there, and one of the reasons is they play good music, so - unusually - I don't care if the music is loud!

The drinks are expensive though. I wouldn't go in there just for a drink.

ETA: When I say "good music", I mean of course, music that I like :))

    • I always like Redemptions coffee though I've not visted for awhile..Romeo Jones was always my 1st choice for takeout Coffee Redemption 2nd. What IS with all these independent Yoga and Pilates Studios? Theres one on London Rd in Forest Hill (Mind) thats recently opened and then theres the Pilates place thats opened on North X Road. I looked at the prices of the one on NorthX road and was frankly shocked at how expensive it is, The FH one is slightly less.  Made me decide to stick with classes in The local authority gym
    • Dulwich Village update: The old DVillage location is (again?) under offer. The storefront next to the new grocer is going to open as a yoga and pilates studio...the name of which I've forgotten. 🤦‍♂️  Megan's is starting to push its takeaway coffee and cannibalise some of Redemption Coffee's market share. Is Megan's struggling? It's quite a big restaurant they have and rent cant be cheap. The reinventing of the Megan's branch on Lordship Lane as Ollie's seems to have stalled. And Redemption is looking a bit tired these days...
    • You're being a bit of a dick. The whole point of a forum is to discuss what is going on in the locality and this seems as reasonable a question as anything.
