I'm meeting with council officers next week (this is for prelim discussions on the running of the club)and will raise the points raised here. Gussy, I don't know if you are aware that the funding for such schemes was cut by central Government (early intervention funding ie for surestart and other childrens services) Southwark and some other inner London boroughs lost 90 pounds per child in grant funding compared to eg 30 pounds in Richmond and other more affluent boroughs.

At Council assembly on Wednesday 270k was allocated in the Capital building program for rebuilding the one o clock club. (FYI the Lib Dems voted against this.) This together with the money already allocated by Greener Cleaner Safer means that the facility will be rebuilt.

Hi Fushia,

I don't know about access, but will ask this at the meeting, but I do know the official opening is on Saturday 23rd July, just in time for the school/nursery summer holidays. Unfortunately I had previous inflexible plans for the day, but I think the other two Peckham Rye Councillors, Victoria Mills and Gavin Edwards will be there.

Renata, I just don't understand why on earth would there be money to rebuild, but there's no money to run the place? Why are they allocating money to it when there is such a dire need to make cuts everywhere? For goodness sake the libraries might be closing down, but I know, we could really do with a nice shiny new 1 o clock club. Totally doesn't make sense and is awful awful planning, it makes you wonder who on earth is running the council.

Does the Capital Building Program generously give money to building places, but then thats it? Set it up yourself and good luck?

Rebuilding is good, of course, but at what cost? A nice new building that we end up having either a small allocated slot for, or to have to pay for some 'class'. If that's the case I probably won't use it. There's enough other things like that available in the area. The main reason I use the 1 o clock club is because its free and a DROP IN. I really hope the future 'vendor' retains this ethos, but I'm sceptical. Personally I'd rather keep the old shack that it is and it stays open as is.

    • You can get a card at the till, though, to get the discount. You don't have to carry it with you (or load it onto your phone), you can just get a different card each time. Not sure what happens if they notice 🤣
    • Yes..that may be the case but membership STARTING at £115 a month is still unafforable for many. Council gyms also have a large range of equipment and I had a  PT at Dulwich leisure centre when I was in Full Time employment who was incredible and even kept in contact during lockdown giving me a program I could do at home and checking in weekly at no charge or personal gain for herself. I dont doubt that Fit For may be a good gym (Its been in situ long enough so must be doing something right) However the cost of membership means it is affordable for the few not the many. If I could afford that kind of fee I would rather get a train to Canary Wharf and go to Virgin active where theres a pool and incredible classes and facilities
    • This sounds great 👍
    • We found a red TREK bike yesterday that had clearly been stolen and dumped. Would love to reunite it with its owner. Get in touch if you know whose it is.
