Almost Bob, I watched LW1 a few months back and was surprised by how awful it was to a grown up me.

Similarly I caught Logan's Run on Film Four recently.

I'd seen that when I was about 9 and thought it the most profound piece of cinema I'd ever see. Oh dear god how wrong I was!!!!

Jenny Agutter was still fit mind!

Batman Begins, starts well, develops ok, third act falls off something sheer and tall to an abyss far below.

Dark Knight was ok, I don't know, just a bit meh.

Want to see Kickass but haven't yet.

Can I recommend Scott Pilgrim vs the World again? Not strictly speaking action, though as it's about a chap who has to fight the 7 eveil exes in order to win her heart it can't be far off.

I'd take Logan's Run over Face Off. It's more believable for a start. And I swear, if Face Off didn't have all that slow-motion, it would only last 45 minutes.

The two Christopher Nolan Batman films are good, as is the first Tim Burton one.

Some more classic action films - Total Recall, Alien/Aliens, Running Man, Minority Report, Rocky...

It was the script more than anything.. there were so many opportunities for the characters to say something cool, witty and amusing, but all the opportunities seemed to be squandered in favour of something slightly bland and dumbed-down.

I suppose, ultimately, it wasn't a film aimed at me - and a clever script was less important than the fantastical plot and general whizz-bangery.

It's written and directed by the same chap who did Spaced. Admittedly you can be a bit cleverer in an 8 episode low budget late night sit com noone was expecting much from, but much of the approach was quite similar.

Plus when you consider how many good films good English writer-directors have made in Hollywood....go on, name them.

Bruce Robinson of Killing Fields and Withnail & I fame went to America and did.....Jennifer Eight anyone? Then errr went home.

In terms of that Edgar Wright hasn't had a bad stab, though he's probably reading the Evening Standard employment pages as we speak.

I could accept that as an valid reason if said potential 'clever script' would have somehow impinged on all the other aspects of the film which stood to make it a success; but it wouldn't have mattered at all. It would have been exactly the same, only with a better script.

There were so many moments where it was crying-out for some lines in the league of, say, Juno - but they never came.

    • what type of car was it, if they are in demand, might be helpful info.
    • Which has, unfortunately, closed. Au Ciel is much better than Gail's. Big bakery in the parade of shops near Rocca in Dulwich Village with all the seats outside - you can't miss it. Normally a big queue outside at weekends with walkers and cyclists topping up on carbs and coffee!
    • Hi, just to say there was an attempted car theft at the FH end of Underhill over Friday night. Without wanting to go into all the detail, they were pretty adamant and took a great deal of time to (try) take the car. The police came within minutes, and drove around etc.. The police said the car was in demand at the moment. I don’t know if that was brand or model. notwithstanding what the police said, all car owners should be vigilant and neighbours. These thieves were interrupted twice by neighbours, but the thieves came back etc and the neighbours didn’t put 2+2 together as to what was happening to the car. The thieves were two guys, on the cctv it looked like they were wearing grey, but it may have been black (cctv can look odd at night). My neighbours said they were black. They had a bag with them, no doubt carrying tools and they may have been dropped off by a car, that is being investigated.  Take care!!
