Baby boy has a nasty cold with coughing, blocked nose etc so for the past two nights we have been co sleeping in same very large bed. I had him propped up on a pillow and was next to him. He slept fairly well last night - me not so much.

I was wondering whether to use a (mothercare) pillow to temporarily prop him up in his cot for naps today. He doesnt roll over in bed.

What age are pillows considered safe? I seem to recall a swedish friend using one from birth to prevent flat head

cot is propped up anyway at a rather dangerous angle so the pillow stops him sliding down. I sound like an awful mother dont I?

In my desperation with his constant blocked nose I wondered why someone hasn't invented a sort of gro bag that is kind of harnessed to the bed so that they can sleep vertically if need be

pay me no mind I have had less than 5 hours sleep this past week...

Supergolden, you're not a bad mother and if you are then so am I!

DD used to sleep in the Moses basket with the head end propped up so we tried the same when she moved into the cot. However, she ended up sliding to the bottom, so we lay her on one of our pillows in the cot for a few nights and she was absolutely fine. She now sleeps completely flat without a pillow. I suppose it depends on how old your baby is - DD was about 4months but prob wouldn't recommend it for a very young baby. If in doubt you can always have a chat with FSID (foundation for the studdy of infant deaths)

My daughter has had a cold and i made my own massage oil for her, I put olive oil with a couple of drops of sweet thyme oil and lavender as a decongestant and rubbed it on her chest, I also dotted some of the oil on her shoulders and sleeping bag. Then I put some sweet thyme oil into a mug of boiled water so the steam circulates the room. It seemed to help with the snuffles a bit. I originally went in looking for eucalyptus oil but she wasnt old enough for that.
What about a humidifier? If the next round of teething/torrents of snot/blocked nose/colds is anything like the last one think I'll be investing in one. Also, a few drops of Karvol on a tissue tucked under the pillowcase or sheet next to bub's head is sometimes quite effective.

Because he has had a slightly congested nose from birth more or less I could write a book on ways to help inluding olbas, humidifier, steamy bathroom, saline sprays/drops etc etc

sometimes nothing helps (except breastfeeding) until he gets better

anyway I put the pillow under his fitted sheet and that seemed to work but will remove at bedtime

Hi SG, babyreflux (like this) do some crazy/novel sleep aids. There's also a special wedge thing for the mattress if you're not comfortable with a pillow. Although not sure if you're just paying extra for stuff you can get away with improvising yourself??

I didn't use a pillow with my daughter until she was 18 months, but now she has 2 pillows (and cot raised!) as she gets a lot of colds and suffers with post-nasal drip x

    • A shout out for Mark, owner of Pure Plumbers. 07970 971510 They're well established in the Sevenoaks area, but have recently started doing more work in SE London.  Did some v quick and efficient bathroom and boiler fixes for me; have also seen some of the bathrooms he's built, which have a nice attention to detail. • Totally agree regarding not supporting chains. Gail’s was fine but last time I went in Feb this year, actually walked out Fayetteville looking at menu and waiting 15 minutes to even get glass of water and not busy at all. Staff gone down hill - sooner it goes the better… Always prefer to support non chains - so many lovely places with good food to choose from with pleasant staff who know about customer service and sadly, non English which says a lot for our culture, pubs are also becoming abit of a hit and miss affair but maybe just unlucky. At the end of the day all about the chef. Still abit unclear where new place is located - is it down the road from Goose Green where parade of shops are before Peckham Rye?
    • Surely only where the local businesses offer clear advantages, otherwise you are rewarding what should be failure. I want to be served by a better bakery than Gail's, not a worse but local independent one. Certainly give a local independent some time to get the offer right, but don't buy goods which are worse and or more expensive just because the outlet isn't a chain.
    • Let’s just boycott all chains in favour of local businesses.  Places like Gail’s popping up everywhere has a very damaging impact on small businesses. It’s just the same as the new empanadas place but on a bigger scale. I’ll say it a million times more, we hold the power with our choices. Let’s use our power to look after ourselves and our environment (which includes small local family businesses). And yes, I also love Chacarero.
