Trying out views you may not hold? Useful to know.

This was a technique taught to Alexander the Great by Aristotle (his one time tutor). It is a typical technique of the Athenian schools and hones debating skills - it is also the skill deployed by barristers in the UK - who can argue a client's innocence even if they believe (but crucially not know) the contrary. I'm not sure a forum is the best place to exercise such a skill, but it's certainly a useful one to have (if you can argue the other side you may also understand the other side better).

The extreme end of not taking an interest in one's neighbours/surroundings that family on America where everyone knew there was something wrong but no-one felt they should ask questions or do anything about it.

I think you're meant to take an interest into what is going on in a protective sense but not make a big show out of that interest in front of others.

You can pop in with other excuses to check someones all right. Older people are sensitive about there independence sometimes.
