Back to talking about the sub station, reading a lot of the posts most people seem to have positive feedbacks and seem to like it. Mind you, it's not every ones cup of tea, but i must confess it has grown on me (excuse the pun). As previously said, my business (Nicholas Driving Academy)is directly opposite. The sub station itself is pig ugly but the mural has improved its appearance immensely. I just hope now that the council will sort the pavements out. The bollards down by the shops, in my opinion, are ugly and there are far too many of them, although it would be nice to have them painted to match the sub station. I tend to worry that they may prove to be distraction for some drivers. I have heard that the council is intending upon removing the bollards, to allow for parking on the pavement, which I have mixed views about.

The artist who painted the mural is called Morganic and has painted the bins to fit the theme, including Learner plates, as you can see in the attached picture. I think this is quite fun and unique.

The bins are great, ive asked Morgan to paint mine. He has a leaf stencil that looks a bit more subtle than those in the pics. Unique designs with things like bins gives the area a sense of community and should be encouraged.


I can see how some might find the sub station design a bit much at first, but it grows on you and its better than over designed colours that some agency charged 10k for and would get graffiti'd up in about 3 seconds. Street design and art is well known for reducing anti social behaviour, so lets be thankful for something different. Bollards im not so keen on either, some small trees would be nice.


Been here for 25years and that area was a bit grotty for years, its nice to see it come alive, the co-op and French cafe are a god send, though i do miss the ole 24hr bakery. Smell at 4am was magic.

So the 400k works are now under review due to the fact that people may be upset to lose some rusty bollards. Great. I walk past these every day and seriously the novelty has worn off. There is not going to be much money floating about over the next few years so if anyome is keen to get the works happening sooner rather than later and actually smarten the area the area up please speak up as the council are clearly listening.

Reworking this area was one on the labour peckham rye's pledges. It has been voted for!

the Peckham Rye Councillors tried to get the 63 extended over the hill to Honor Oak Park Station, to terminate at Brockley Rise, where the P12 turns round. This is a mere 3 bus stops extra (Cabrini School, Honor Oak Rec, Honor Oak Park Station). Valerie Shawcross was involved in the campaign. It would have been a useful link for those wanting to use the East London Line from Honor Oak Station, but was deemed too expensive by both TFL and Boris, and we were informed that residents can use the P4 and P12 instead!:-S


The 400k is grant money secured by the council's Traffic department for traffic calming/crossing points etc and is not for public transport improvements.

im the artist that was commissioned by Southwark council to decorate the substation building outside the Herne Tavern and the bollards (the latter being a work-in-progess delayed by unforeseen council events).


it was very pleasant to meet so many interesting local people and hear their appreciation for the council making an effort to beautify the area a bit. the 2% of comments that were negative are fair enough. taste is subjective and its not possible to please all the people all the time.


im interestid in painting more public art (or room decorations etc) for those that enjoy it.

    • But I don't think that was what you meant, was it? But he can hardly be held responsible for what somebody else did! Just discovered I forgot to post the above  last night, and now it's overtaken by long posts.  I don't have sufficient knowledge  to counter some of what has been said above, some of which appears to be opinion rather than facts, so it would be pointless for me to say anything else.
    • I am sure our lovely Evri delivery team, who do a firkin hard job, take the time between drops to read the East Dulwich Forum 🤫
    • For every person like OP that moans their doorbell was rung and there was a knock on the door, there's someone else moaning that they didn't hear the delivery drivers. If you've ever done delivery work you'll know that loads of people's bells don't work. The delivery drivers probably goes to a hundred doors a day: press bell, knock door, drop package, move on. If you don't like delivery drivers, insist on delivery by Royal Mail where the workers have wages and a union - or just stop ordering shit online that's artificially cheap. But most of us (me included) don't want that
    • If someone comes to my house and bangs my door and slams my gate, I'd speak to them about it nicely and ask if they would please not do that. And then subsequently less nicely if they keep doing it, ending in reporting them.  We don't slam doors at home and I don't put up with that either. I can see us moving to a culture where we bribe drivers to be nice by tipping them, but we shouldn't have to. It's not necessary - does not matter if they are on minimum wage or not, or if society means that delivery services are outsourced or whatever reason anyone would like to concoct.
