Opinions on rubber floors for a family kitchen!

Recommended Posts

Sorry for the dull question but just wondered if anyone has a rubber floor in their kitchen and would they recommend it with kids? We're getting a new kitchen and am struggling over what to do with the floor. I'm fed up of constantly sweeping/hoovering slate tiles and lighter coloured tiles would be even worse I'm assuming. I like the idea of rubber as in it's a soft landing and warm to walk on but I'm worried it will make it look like a Fitness First.

We have rubber on the bathroom floor, I love it, but it has got a few stains & dents now...that said it's been down 10 years!

It's pale yellow with circles on - Dalsouple?? We got tiles as it's quite a small area but would def. Go for one sheet next time as the joins annoy me!! Smallest sheet was twice the size we needed, which was why we didn't do it that way.

I have been designing kitchens for 5 years! Rubber floor is great! Go for it! Choose colour carefully. Go for one sheet if you can so it could be removed easily in few years time if you decide to change it!

Good luck with your project.

If you need any advice just shout!

Have you considered wood? We got oiled oak (extra wide planks) for our kitchen and I love them. Soft and don't show the dirt at all. You re-oil them about once a year or so and they look brand new again (this is very easy...just wash floors once and then go over with oil on a cloth). There is a wood floor place behind Forest Hill that has beautiful wood flooring and good prices. Think it is called Wood 4 Floors.

I'm finding it really hard to visualise what a rubber floor would look like? I've never heard of it. It is like lino? I hate our kitchen floor (old victorian floorboards which we had sanded and stained, but with lots of nails and cracks etc) We were thinking of replacing with stone but so cold!!!

    • I used to go to Brockwell all the time, but with lockdown it changed from being able to stay all day sunbathing and swimming to a limited lane swim time slot for the same price. This totally changed the relaxed vibe. It's also incredibly difficult to book online. If this has changed back I'd love to know. I really miss how it was. I guess it was an easy way to make a lot more money!
    • Yes.  It happens to a neighbour who has a van parked off Sydenham Hill quite a lot. It's because the fuel lines are easier to get to than cars.
    • I like the idea of a lido, provided it's accessible to all. I haven't been for a while now.   Do you have to book Brockwell lido in advance and or have they gone back to just queuing  to enter?  Are you able to stay for as long as you wish or are there time slots.  Do teenagers  have access to these spaces? I can't see them booking in advance and time restrains would  not work for them...particularly if its costly. The last time I went to the lido it seemed to lack the diversity that it once had.
    • If you want to reduce the sound from your flat, you can add acoustic or sound absorbing material under your carpet. There are many options for different budgets (google sound reduction in upstairs flat) In terms of improving your relationship with your downstairs neighbour, a really good first action would be to stop labelling him as mentally ill and start to consider that he may be very stressed and grumpy after prolonged noisy upstairs neighbours who don't take any notice of his complaints. There's always two sides to one story, but this is completely solvable
