I'm trying to organise a night away (but staying in London) for my husband's birthday at the end of the month. We're due number 2 in 7 weeks so I'll be 36 weeks by then, so don't want to go further than London (last baby was born just before 37 weeks so not taking any chances!). Plus leaving 2 yr old at home with my mum so looking to minimise travel time and maximise time away from toddler! Have been looking and can't decide, so thought I'd seek personal recommendations...I like idea of somewhere quite luxurious but equally being that pregnant I won't want to be stressing about looking glamorous! Have plenty ideas for where we can eat so sorted on that side. We've done the soho hotel so am avoiding the others in that chain (charlotte st etc) as looking for somewhere new to us...

Did think about the church st hotel in camberwell but thought perhaps TOO close to home! Food is lovely though...

any ideas??

I've enjoyed stays at the Hazlitt in Soho, and they have a sister hotel in the city called the Rookery which looks lovely, both quite old-style - if modern is your style then they might not be for you - we chose it because our house is fairly modern so it made a change. Breakfast wasn't great, so would recommend going out for breakfast somewhere yummier....

or maybe the new St Johns hotel near Leicester square?

we went to the Hazlitt for my husbands 40th and it was so lovely. I definitely want to try the Rookery next, and agree that St Johns is maybe a bit trendy - might be fun for the curiosity factor, but might not feel like a treat.

Don't have the breakfast though - it was those rolls you get half-frozen and then reheated - yuck! might have changed by now, it was a while ago....

have a great time wherever you choose,

For my birthday last year, me and husband went to Andaz in Liverpool St. Lovely hotel, excellent breakfast, near to spitalfields market for a Sunday browse and also by brick lane (curry. Love a curry. Mmmm...)

was close enough to get home asap if needs be, Which we ended up doing as I was still b/f seb and couldn't get a response from my pump- had to rush home to feed him. Well done me.

We've stayed at The Academy in Bloomsbury a few times including our wedding night (haven't been post baby though!). It's not 5 star by any means but really nice with lovely breakfasts which you can have in your room if you want. It's near Drummond St which has great curry restaurants on it and also close-ish to Goodge St area for other eating options.
Hazlitt's is great (tho i agree about breakfast). Also try the Malmaison. It's a boutique chain (sister chain to Hotel du vin) and they do great breakfast in your room. Haven't tried the London one, but can highly recommend the Oxford, Belfast, Cambridge, and Henley ones!

    • No, just no.  Zero tolerance does not mean we expect zero crime but that we do not accept a standard level as normal and unavoidable. For those who have suffered such “minor” crimes, myself included having had my house broken into,  it is clear from the lack of action that they are considered “acceptable”’. Once small crimes become known to be ignored, it changes where and how we live.
    • Lloyd Weber and Cilla Black were supposed to leave when Blair got in, but didn't
    • You can't have zero tolerance unless you live in a fascist/police state.  Sadly it is something you have to accept in a democracy.  There has always been crime, even in North Korea, the Soviet bloc, Nazi Germany, Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge etc.   The discussion point is how big a police force we need and capabilities, punishment, and building communities.  And how much we are prepared to pay in extra taxation. Even in the good (economic) times there is crime.  And crime under both Labour and Tory governments. I do not accept that phone thefts and parcel thefts are just statistics.  Police have to prioritise what they do, we might not agree with it.  And most criminals are multi-tasking, moving to where the best return is considering the risk of being caught. And there has to be a market, someone somewhere needs to buy a stolen product (I never buy off Gumtree). A starting point would be to decriminalise all illegal drugs, but that is definitely for a separate Lounge conversation, interesting discussion paper here: https://kar.kent.ac.uk/105520/1/A. Stevens - In defence of the decriminalisation of drug possession in the uk - PPDF.pdf Did you watch any of the series of Peaky Blinders?  This was a very popular series that glorified gang crime and violence.  Funny (ironic) that may enjoy films and TV that does this.  Although only the first series had any historical accuracy in it,  Criminal gangs were around before and ever since.
