Aaaah! Back to inner-city bitchiness. I may be a Spud but I also think Woolwich Wanderers will do well this season though it pains me to say so if not cup success then they will certainly once again finish in the top three. Other than that I certainly will not be making any predictions this early apart from West Ham will stay up and finish mid-table, only a few points below Spurs. It's good to have the Irons back and some regular ribbing from Quids et al. I can't wait for MOTD tomorrow night.

Always suspected you had some Welsh in you Mick Mad.

After the holier-than-thou brow-beating by Olympophile journalists in the past week it was a day of:

- players fined for Twittering,

- and going on strike for a move to a richer bigger club'

- managers sniping at each other,

- and the dawning reminder that TV's dominance of the game means that three of the four clubs most people think will contest the premiership don't even play today...

...all paling into insignificance the moment Nolan scores a hotly disputed (by Villa) goal and gives the Irons an opening day victory... aaah, it's good to have it back and to be back in it! B)

If Suarez hadn't forced himself into the early running for the 'Torres' or 'Cow's Arse/Banjo' stakes things might have been different but Rodgers' refusal to use Carroll until he had to was a fault.

Good news re Diame and nice to see Maiga has confidence to try and round gk when only on for last 9 minutes - Villa looked poor though.

Sky have had to issue an apology to Rangers.

Rangers games this season will not be shown in 3D as suggested, instead it should have read D3.

Indeed. Martinez (or Lambert) - who don't have any blots on their records - would have been far, far better choices.

Rogers track record is very mediocore - saved Watford from relegation with Boothroyd's team; took Reading from 4th to 21st whilst alienating senior players and spending more money than any other manager on players he then didn't even play; and he then got Swansea promoted with Martinez and Sousa's team.

    • It has come to this author’s attention that the world of 4+ admissions — that most enigmatic of educational rites — continues to bewilder even the most composed of parents. Fear not. For in a former life, I was not merely a humble observer, but a seasoned educator of over twenty years, and Head of Pre-Prep for a distinguished dozen. Now, with quill exchanged for touchscreen, I have taken to that most modern of salons — Instagram — to dispense guidance, answer frequently whispered questions, and illuminate the shadowy corners of school selection with clarity and calm. Each post bears my signature twist: a blend of insight, levity, and the occasional raised eyebrow. Should you find yourself adrift in the sea of admissions, I suggest you peruse my latest dispatch. • Perhaps Gooseygreeny was not familiar with the wildlife before Gala was imposed on the park, since when its value to wildlife has deteriorated. The Park had never been disturbed before, as the council had respected it as a Site of Importance for Nature Conservation, so only the Common was licensed by them as a site for events. The first time Gala held their event, there was a tree with woodpeckers nesting in it right in the middle of the main field they used and thrushes, blackbirds and great tits nesting within the shrubs and trees immediately surrounding the field. The woodpeckers were thriving on ants from the anthills in the grass. To those of us who used to enjoy watching the wildlife, it was very obviously a Site of Importance for a variety of birds. Despite being accessed by the public and their dogs, it had been relatively undisturbed,  which was one of the main reasons why it was so special and why I have been opposed to the Gala festival being held during the bird nesting season.
