I'd go along with that. A gentleman, a fine footballer, 106 caps and the only England captain to lift the World Cup.

Otherwise I'd go for Jimmy Greaves. My boyhood hero. The greatest goalscorer I've ever seen. Two great feet, good in the air, quick with bags of skill, could do taps ins as well as beat five players, round the keeper and score.

After him I'd go for Bobby Charlton, great passer of the ball, a drop of the shoulder, body swerve and past his man and a thunderbolt in either foot. Far cry from small boys in the park, jumpers for goalposts. Rush goalie. Two at the back, three in the middle, four up front, one's gone home for his tea. Beans on toast? Possibly, don't quote me on that. Marvellous.

I never saw Moore, Charlton or Greaves play, unfortunately. I saw George Best run out for Fulham, and Cruyff in his last season playing at Barcelona, but neither were anything like the players they had been before. I saw Cantona for United, Bergkamp and Henry for Arsenal, Zola for Chelsea, and they stood out as great players. I'd be hard-pushed to say that any English footballer that I've seen play was one of the 'greats' in that sense, of standing out from all their peers. The closest, honestly, is probably either Shearer, because in his prime he was the best goalscorer playing in England by a mile, or Beckham, because in a few games he just took over and changed the whole game.
Gazza. Not saying he's England's greatest footballer but before he did that ridiculous tackle on Gary Charles in the FA Cup final in '91 and buggered up his knee he was well on the way to becoming one of the best players in the world and at the World Cup at Italia '90 was probably the best player of the tournament. Hope he gets through his latest setback.

Not saying he's up there with some of those greats, but I don't think you hear Macca's name mentioned often enough.

He was great at Liverpool, pretty good for England (important part of the 96 side) but mostly he's a very rare Englishman who had the guts to go abroad, played for a top team, and made an impact. Shame injuries caught up with him, but that is common for a lot of the "Spice Biys" for whatever reason. The p

I agree, he showed maturity beyond his years, those charging runs through the middle were poignantly Gazza-esque.

LG, by the law of averages, one day your predictions for a Utd defeat will come about...;-)

Apparently he'll be back for the match.

Turning up for the match maybe but what about training? Or will he pull out claiming that often quoted African injury after a tournament - malaria. Really don't have a good feeling about Saturday's match, that's my typical Spurs fan's pessimism shining through. I'm going to the game, so hope I'm wrong, depends if we've got any strikers on the pitch.

Carra to retire at the end of the season.

Probably the right time for him, he's far from what he once was. However, a few years back at his peak, I genuinely feel that he was unlucky not to be picked ahead of Terry & Rio for England. In a way he suffered for being versatile, as he never got the opportunity to make a particular position his own.

Great player for Liverpool. (except when he scored 2 own goals for Man U when he was about 18/19)

...i think you're wrong. It doesn't and the odds won't be there. ie on the whole the games we 'predict' right are by and large below (and often way below) evens. As a keen gambler i have no illusions about how a group of EDFers collective knowledge is better than market makers.....it's not, by miles :)

    • There is no other way than to move out. I am in such a situation myself where our neighbours are complete assholes. They breached the Covenants and when we pointed it they said to take them to court if we want.  Unfortunately, they have made our life miserable and we have to move out.    What helped in our situation is having a calm conversation face to face. It only happened after they tasted their own medicine(i know it's mean but nothing else helps).   I know it's unfair but better move out and prioritise your mental health.
    • Thank you so much for the reply. Jeffery turned up a couple of hours ago. I edited title to say found but somehow it didn't save. Thank you so much for going to the trouble of posting this sighting... even if it didn't turn out to be Jeff.  Jeff came running down the street like a bat out of hell and ran into the house. Never been so relieved. Mind you i've been up and down the roads shouting his name out all day. Even in Wingfield street. 🤗
    • I saw a smallish black cat outside 1 Wingfield Street just now.  I am not convinced it was Jeff, the eyes look a little different.
