Rhinestone Cowboy
Liverpool newsNot sure if already postedThe Anfield side are set to invite non-League forward Daniel Carr for a week-long trial. The 18-year-old, who plays for south London side Dulwich Hamlet, has scored 23 goals in 23 games this season. 'bout now
I'm not sure the ref last night was to blame. From his view it looked pretty nasty, he consulted the linesman and off he went. I think with challenges like that 4 out of 10 times the player walks, last night was just one of those times. Of course it was a game changer and of course it was a huge game but those are the breaks. Some might even call it Karma.( spoken from the P.O.V of neutral tellybox watcher) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/18997-football-focus/page/552/#findComment-622462 Share on other sites

Otta
It's hard to know exactly what the ref saw, it was dangerous play without doubt, but could the ref have seen clearly that his eyes were always on the ball (as they keep saying in the news)?Having seen lots of replays, I think he deserved a yello, and I do have sympathy for United. I don't think the ref deserves a load of abuse though because he never saw the replays, he saw a bloke go flying in with foot way high. El Pibe
"Why were you not supporting a fellow English team in Europe?"That's really my problem, they're not really English teams in the true sense anymore, just English brands. Likewise Real *spits*, and I'm a bloody Madrile?o!!!Last night was just watching a couple of All-Stars accrued by rich organisations, it leaves me utterly cold.I can't get excited about them unless it's some sort of underdog like when O'Neill's Leicester City had a good run in the cup winners a few years back. El Pibe
"What do you mean by 'true sense'...the number of English players? Surely football is just a reflection/extension of the world/society we now live in. Is England even English in the 'true sense' anymore?.."Basically yes, though it's a simple yardstick. What really matters is in the players' hearts. What it means to represent the club.Basically if a club doesn't manage champions league football for a couple of years, how many players would be scouring the clauses in their contracts to go and 'represent' someone who is playing champions league football. If that's the majority then the club is merely a conduit of mercenary talent, albeit quality mercenary talent. As for the rest of it, I'm not sure what you mean, are you saying that the world has fully globalised and national identity is meaningless? I don't think so but possibly a subject for another thread, but to your last point, to relate it back to the first point, I think it still boils down to how much it matters.Noone doubts Mo Farah's Englishness when you see how much it meant to represent his adopted home. Zola Budd, not so much, it was a means to an end. That's why the modern game leaves me cold and I'd rather watch a good game of hurling these days. But given your points about the changed world and football's place in it, why then do you think it right someone should support an English club over a foreign one, it's kind of cake and eat it?Personally spoeaking I'd support, say Fenerbahce over man u or chelsea, because to my eyes it looks like they care more ;-) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/18997-football-focus/page/552/#findComment-622534 Share on other sites

Alan Medic
Regardless of the harshness or otherwise of the red card for Nani, many teams win games being a man down. I don't think United adapted to the change Real made by bringing on Modric and for a while looked all over the place and lacking composure. Saying that RVP has not been scoring recently and Rooney is more miss than hit as he showed with his effort near the end.Having heard Keane talk about how it was a red card (he's the expert), it finally got me off the fence to decide he's an effin eeget. Jah Lush
You make some good points there Doc. I thought Modric bossed the midfield when he came on. Everything went through him and he scored a cracking goal - the little mercenary bastard. Van Purse-Strings was practically anonymous through and as for Roy Keane's comments before and after the game you'd never have thought he once played for Man Utd. El Pibe
absolutely it does, you could say it all really started in Italy, spread here and has infected Spain, though Barca still has a special something about it with its great youth setup* and the fact its owned by the fans.Fair enough if it was just a question, it did seem like you were implying they should. TBH there wa no criticism implicit in my post, I'm just saying how I feel thses days, this may be more a reflection of changes in me (fatherhood, mid life crisis, recent bereavements) than in football of course.*and yes, I acknowledge that Man U does this well too, though few make it to first team stalwart as did the generation petering out now Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/18997-football-focus/page/552/#findComment-622547 Share on other sites

'bout now
Yes RD you can. I support West Ham for my sins, as you know. The Champions League is a club competition and as far as I'm concerned has nothing to do with nationality, its just a chance for me to watch Football at the professed highest level. And I apologise for the mischief but in the grand scheme of things it's only football innit. I'm not bothered if people don't want to support Man Utd when we play in Europe, especially rival fans, I was just curious as to what your reasoning was, with you not being a traditional rival fan.Apart from the usual suspects I'm happy to 'support' any English team in Europe.
