Our bird feeder is about 7m away from our rear window and the parakeets never come to it even though ther's lots of them in the tree 25m away. We get lots of natives coming. So it might be something to do with proximity to your house.

why are parakeets, which over-winter in this country, denounced as entitled foreign scum, while the smaller birds are referred to as 'natives'? many of whom are actually migrants e.g. blackbirds, fieldfares etc

shades of birdy Windrush...

inter-bird bullying is done by the pigeons and doves in our garden

the poor smaller birds wait their turn, and then of course the squirrels turn up and jump the queue!

I just cave in and put out more bird seed and suet...

Blackbirds do not migrate.

I like to quote the Guardian (although I don't read papers myself anymore) because I know that EDFers on the whole prefer it....

my teaching does not involve sources

i was pointing out to the OP that some so-called 'native' birds are actually migrants - unlike parakeets which are now a settled species in this country, (also grey squirrels, rabbits, chestnut trees, sycamores and any number of garden plants - all introduced, but now part of the 'native' furniture)

in the process, i seem to have outed uncleglen as a peddler of fake news

That's a an amazing price. I think I will look at making something similar at about half the price. Would anybody be interested in one

    • I’d also recommend Paul for electrical work. He came round the other week to help us out with a handful of jobs (installing an SPD, new light fittings, installing a dimmer switch, a bathroom fan). His quote was cheaper than what I got from others, he turned up on time and he got the job done quickly.
    • We’d like to add our recommendation for Lukasz and team at L&L Building & Maintenance.  Lukasz has recently installed a roof terrace for us, and we’ve found him a pleasure to work with from start to finish. We contacted about a dozen recommended builders and found his quote very competitive. During the build his team delivered quality work, they were no hassle in the house at all and they kept the place tidy every day. The terrace looks great, and we’re very happy customers. What stood out in particular was Lukasz’s responsiveness, right from discussing quotes to follow-up during the build. Lukasz often checked in and was always available when we needed him.  We’ll definitely contact Lukasz again for future building work and we’d happily recommend him to others looking for a reliable builder.   Lukasz Kugaczewski L&L Building & Maintenance 07926651960 [email protected] www.landl-build.com
    • Yes, I did mention the train, which I now get from East Dulwich to Guys instead of the 40. Depends where in East Dulwich you are starting from which route is easiest! I think it is probably lack of staff rather than lack of hospitals which is the problem?
    • What can be done? How about reporting it to the police?
