Repair to lacquer on chest of draws- advice and/or recommendations

Recommended Posts

Hi

We recently had a spillage (Reed diffuser liquid) onto our chest of draws and the lacquer is damaged. The chest of drawers is "oriental" style with a distressed effect. A glass tealight holder is actually stuck onto the surface.

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how it can be repaired (and remove the candle holder)? whether it can be repaired or who could repair it?

Many thanks

If it is a valuable piece, then you need proffessional help, and it could work out exspensive.

The glass being fused with the surface could be dangerous to remove yourself and cause further damage.

If its a genuine chinese laquer finish you need someone who specializes in that genre.

Good luck.

Thank you.

It's not an antique; I bought it on sale from Lombok so paying alot for it to be repaired might cost more than replacing it. I agree that I won't be able to remove it myself and I suspect the whole surface will need stripping and re-lacquering.

Funding crisis is getting worse and the VAT on Education pushed children out of independent schools, now their SEND needs are to be met by the state.
    • I completely agree with you - and last night was really terrible where I am. Between midnight and 1am was the worst, where it genuinely felt like a war zone. I had to run out of my house to try and stop a grown man setting them off in open space right by our front doors. In response he went to throw a half lit one at me and then seemed to think better of it. I am so sad at how bad the situation has got here and how selfish people are. Fireworks are bad for the environment and for pets and wildlife, as well as just being unnecessary noise for people too. I have sent an email today to Helen Hayes, which I have done previously on this issue. Would advise anyone to write to your MP to do the same, and to ask them to engage with the debates scheduled for 19 Jan.
