The question is, when you need them will they turn up? I know an officer working in a control room who sat on the phone for an hour listening to a woman having the s**t kicked out of her by her partner fo an hour before he was able to locate a car that was free to respond!

His verdict, informally expressed: "Get out of London, we can't protect you."

I have had the same experience with a guy running around near The Plough threatening people. I caled the police twice and they had no-one to respond. Another occasion at Mile End - young woman nearly assaulted and robbed in a coffee shop - forty-five minutes after the police had been called they still hadn't shown and I had to leave. Friend recently was burgled just off LL while he and his family were upstairs. Police were called in early hours - didnt turn up till about 8am. In the meantime said thugs had come back and attempted to steal his car.

I love the idea of the police - works in theory. Problem is it is a complete lottery as to whether they will actually be available to respond.

Unfortunately Damien, London is a hugely demanding place to Police especially in an inner Borough such as here in Southwark. The police don't have an infinite number of uniformed officer to deal with calls and many calls they respond to take time to report/deal with properly. So to be honest yes I can believe that sometimes the police do take a while to respond or have no one to send. Cant we just give them our support instead of criticising what is an incredibly challenging job?? Just an idea.

I appreciate the difficulties the police have and that it is largely a resourcing issue. I am less interested in criticising the police and more interested in seeing where that leaves us and where things are going with further cuts. I take your point, however, but I feel we are moving towards a situation where people and communities will have to be more proactive in protecting themselves in a lawful and responsible manner.

    • Off topic but I don't want to start another thread. I just had a Royal Mail delivery of a parcel. The postman ignored a large sign on the door asking people to ring the bell, and just rattled the letterbox, which luckily I heard. When I opened the door, I found the parcel on my doorstep in full view of passers by, and the postman getting into his van a few houses down. I then received an email informing me that my parcel had been delivered to my "safe place", an "enclosed porch". I don't have a safe place, and my porch is not enclosed, it is basically a doorstep to a terraced house . I know posties have a lot to do, but I find things like this really annoying.
    • Thanks, will try AJ Farmers and both Superdrug and B&M sell them.
    • I finally tried Dai Due Fratelli last weekend. They were so incredibly friendly. Really good pizzas and a good wine selection. Really reasonably priced. I urge everyone to support it.
    • Thanks for that info. I figured the vans and minibuses were easier targets than cars. I'll try to deliberate the best way forward as it's stopping my family from going out on trips. We might have to try a dashcam or CCTV
