We have been using the Biff and Chip books but suddenly at level 7 they seem excessively expensive!

I wondered if anyone had any recommendations for books to help with my son?s reading around level 7,8,9? (I believe this equates to turquoise, purple, gold)?

Thanks in advance!

When my son was at this stage I spent a lot of time on the Southwark library catalogue looking for reading books of the right level. I found some really good ones and some of them are tagged to the series so you can find similar books. My son enjoyed the Poor Pirates books: http://www.lovereading4kids.co.uk/series/Start%20Reading:%20The%20Poor%20Pirates

You can order them free on a child?s card from other libraries. My daughter also really liked the Animal Fairy Tales series - if you search for Pandarella you will find it.

I shall lower the tone considerably and say that the graphic novels by Dav Pilkey - Captain Underpants, Super Diaper Baby, and Dogman turned my son (at a similar level) from a strong but reluctant reader into an avid bookworm. The plots mostly revolve around poos turning into men, and talking toilets - but my son laughs so much and is so excited that it has been a joy to watch. I truly urge you to give them a go.

Can I suggest Project X reading series:

My elder son raced through these and my younger son (7) has finished the first set. They are graded Oxford Tree reading bands and it's good value from The Book People.

Also Dav Pilkey is brilliant and my younger son re-reads the whole Captain Underpants/Dogman series over and over!

    • This week's edition of The Briefing Room I found really useful and impressively informative on the training aspect.  David Aaronovitch has come a long way since his University Challenge day. 😉  It's available to hear online or download as mp3. https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m002n7wv In a few days time resident doctors -who used to be known as junior doctors - were meant to be going on strike. This would be the 14th strike by the doctors’ union since March 2023. The ostensible reason was pay but now the dispute may be over without more increases to salary levels. The Government has instead made an offer to do something about the other big issue for early career doctors - working conditions and specialist training places. David Aaronovitch and guests discuss what's going on and ask what the problem is with the way we in Britain train our doctors? Guests: Hugh Pym, BBC Health Editor Sir Andrew Goddard, Consultant Gastroenterologist Professor Martin McKee, Professor of European Public Health, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Mark Dayan, Policy Analyst, Nuffield Trust. Presenter: David Aaronovitch Producers: Caroline Bayley, Kirsteen Knight, Cordelia Hemming Production Co-ordinator: Maria Ogundele Sound Engineers: Michael Regaard, Gareth Jones Editor: Richard Vadon
