Hi

Does anyone know if the park closing times have been changed as a result of cuts? My adughter and I were turned out of Sunray Gardens just before six this evening - which seems appallingly early when it is still so light. Still lots of people wanting to use the park, play in payground, walk dogs. Two kids just climbed straight back in - don't really blame them - where else can they go?

Looked at park closing times for rest of year and they do seem early. When the clocks go back the park will be closing at 3.30 - just as the schools come out. Is this normal and something I have just missed? It certainly feels much too early.

Spoke to others and people were genuinely v annoyed about this. It felt new. One mum had spent 1 1/2 hours waiting around for a brownies group to start earlier in the week but couldn't use the park - despite it being perfectly light.

So much for encouraging us all to get active.

I've said this before - I don't see the logic in closing and locking the parks. The committed will and do climb over and thru' the railings so it achieves very little in the way of security for users or park equipment / flora / fauna.

If "cuts" are part of the issue - why not dispense with the locking up and the subsequently necessary unlocking. That should save money and make the parks more accessible.

When we lived in the countryside - it was always available and accessible, as is Peckham Rye. Why should Londoners access to green space in more formal parked be rationed?

    • That wouldn’t work people sending money have already paid tax on it
    • The chancellor is exploring new opportunities (  and rightly so) for raising tax revenue in an endeavour to tackle the debt burden facing the nation. One think tank has floated the possibility of taxing  remittances  sent overseas by UK residents using a mix of formal channels  such as banks Western Union, MoneyGram, Wise and WorldRemit.  The proliferation of Western Union agencies has become notable in recent years. It is estimated that  around £28.5 billion was remitted to such countries as India, Pakistan, Nigeria and  countries in the Caribbean. Imposing such a tax could reduce capital outflows and result in greater investment here in the UK. The USA is introducing a tax at the rate of 1% effective 1/1/2026. Canada, Oman and Saudi Arabia are expected to follow suit.
    • I'm trying to be civil, see things from different perspectives and avoid arguments. The grey economy is cash in hand, so no tax to be paid, Chancellor loses out, we all win. Zero hrs contracts must be tough not knowing where or when the next work is coming from.  My position might not be great, but with a bit of sensible weekly shopping, stocking up on best buys etc. one survives and life ain't that bad.
    • I'm trying to find a venue for my daughter's 18th but it's really difficult. Most venues don't want 18th birthday parties. We were looking at Brockwell Hall (The newly refurbed big ol' house in the park) but they want 4.5k for a night which has to finish at 11pm. My daughter tells me her friends don't go out till 11 which I think may be an exageration but I get her point. I'm looking for a bar/club type venue where I can have a DJ till 1/2am and that's about it. Any ideas would be appreciated.
