best place to buy dollars in central/south London

Recommended Posts

There's a really good place in Victoria street there's always people queuing out of the door turn right out of Victoria station and it's a couple of minutes on the right hand side

Saying that you can book your cash with travelex online and get their best price then pick it up at the airport I think you have to book 24 or 48 hours in advance they also do those prepaid dollar cards you load them up with dollars and use as a debit card over there save on fees and you get good exchange rate

Have a good trip

It might be the best place if you can't get to Victoria but if you can, the Post Office is regularly beaten by a few cents on the dollar.

There are two places in Victoria which are worth going to - their rates are usually the same. One is the place that pablogrande recommends - it's just past the crossroads where Thirleby Rd/Palace St meet Victoria St. The other place that is usually a bit quieter is the first shop on Vauxhall Bridge Road - just round the corner from the Pret. Neither charge commission and they are always a few cents better than any of the national bods.

Having bought dollars many times, I would recommend not going to the Post office because the rate is much less.

In my experience, going to an American Express but not one in the City or West End, offers the best rates. In the City and West End they charge more because of the location. There's one opposite Harrods that I last went to and they offered the best deal. I had the time to do the research then. It may not be the case now.

Until recently this guy was offering luuudicrously good deals on dollars, euros, anything - I don't see how he could have been making any money on it....

..don't know where he is now though, not answering his phone.

Change Link in Victoria chuffing brilliant www.change-link.co.uk

For years I used holes in the wall when abroad, not realising that Barclays were fleecing me both on the exchange rate and commission.

Watch out in the US, totally antiquated banking system and they will charge you to change money.

My best friend... :0)

    • I am  ill in bed with Covid. It's not that I "can't be bothered" to read things. I am feeling crap and don't have the mental  energy at the moment. I am not "brushing stuff aside and pleading ignorance." I am truthfully saying when I don't presently know enough about something to be able to comment. I have always been very careful to try to  differentiate between fact and opinion in both  my posts and other people's, and I am not clear what your point is. And I am certainly not trying to wind anybody up. This is a forum. If you don't want to respond to my posts, that's up to you. I'm not sure why you feel the need to announce it.
    • @NewWave I know how you feel. Like you, I've lived and spent prolonged periods of time in some pretty crazy places and always thought I could handle a bunch of kids. But, no - they got to me and I was shaking like a leaf afterwards. That's what age does to us.  But I did engage with them, so bear that in mind.  My advice would be to never let anything like that stop you doing the things you love. I'm certainly not going to stop using the park, there's no way they get to take away our cherished spaces!  If you see them, just change tack and keep out of their way. My dog won't even go that way again, so that's that problem solved. (If I see them again, I'm going to keep taking photos from a safe distance).
    • Truly horrific. Being passive or fighting back is what many of us think about by violent theft.
