Digging out cellars

Evening all,

Does anyone have experience of or knowledge of cellar dig outs and conversions in this area, particularly Upland Road? We're looking into it but would like to hear from someone who's had it done in this area, or knows someone who's gone through it and particularly if everything went smoothly on the dig and build, and what's happened since.

What part of Upland Road top end should be dry, botton near Rye you might encounter the River Rye.

Go into your Cellar and use a devining device, it looks like a pair of twigs in a V if it twitchss, you have water below.

We're in the middle, near Underhill Road. Our cellar has two raised areas either side and a 5ft wide path down the middle dug out to about 6'6" below the joists. Our floor is modestly damp in the summer, and dries out in the winter.

I might try water diviniation in the morning, or perhaps pray for divine guidance.

Everyone's still on the lofts round here Chris. Digging down for multi media room / personal dungeon are still mainly Chelsea/Kensington or at a push Clapham. What did you plan putting in yours?

Office and storage was the plan. I've done some research into costs and it's beyond my means. But there's always the lottery or the moribund secret millionaire uncle to rely on.

We are in the same stretch of Upland - have you lived in the house long? In periods of heavy rain we find our cellar floods quite badly so I would imagine trying to waterproof it would be tricky. Ours is useable, but we have to make sure things are in plastic containers!

We've been in the house 8 years, and only had one flood when an outside drain was blocked. Since then it's been fine.

I would have thought that any basement room would need thorough waterproofing, regardless of geology and water tables.

Digging out a cellar to make a proper room is very, very expensive - but just tanking out an existing cellar for storage should be affordable.
