Best films of the decade according to reviews at the time.

Don't get Hurt Locker up there.

I enjoyed it, but its a very silly film isnt it, as far from a thoughtful reflection on the human cost of imperial adventurism as you can get.

My old school mucker Ray Beckett from William Penn School 1964-68 won an Oscar for best sound

on The Hurt Locker.

Foxy

36, but i haven't managed to get to the cinema in about 5 years.

I'm glad Waltz with Bashir is up there, i did manage a trip for that.

The lord of the rings are technically and visually amazing whilst simultaneously being quite boring, but perhaps critics came away still wowed by the time they did their piece.

Remember all scores are reviews at the time averaged, not in reflection.

Pixar deserrve to have a few in there. first half of Wall-E is masterly, I loved Up and the incredibles. Surprsied Toy Story 3 not there.

Enjoying The Inkeepers, in a big, empty, cavernous, echoing house with the wind whipping through the trees and the sheet metal outside.

Thank god nothing seems to actually happen, thus far. It's a refreshing take on horror after all the recent post 80s excesses.

Also lovely, knowing, pastiche of the shining.

What's the film where someone jumps out of nowhere and says 'ironyyyyy' in a really camp fashion?

I keep finding myself doing this and can't for the life of me work out where I picked up this annoying habit.

Did it this morning in the security check in at Dublin airport. Man was loudly and vocally berating people for not having their boarding passes ready or belts off or coats off or ipads out (it was a long queue, we got fifteen flavours of this rant bellowing out) as they got to the front.

Then he got there and hadn't put his liquids in a bag, he got all flustered and i thought i did 'ironyyyy' in my head, but turns out it was out loud.

If looks could have killed.

The security staff then decided to go through his bag with a toothcomb just to annoy him too. Marvellous!!!

Saw War Horse last night (I know TV etc)..... fook me one of the most awful films I've ever seen - fleeting carboard characters barely developed, mawkish beyond belief, huge requirement for willing suspense of disbelief, awful, awful dialogue...hard to feel empathy for the horse even, felt almost like a 'Spinal Tap' WW1 film.

a couple of good ones this weekend.

Zero Dark Thirty. I thought her previous films rather silly so wasnt expecting much, but given the subject matter pleasantly surprised by the relatively low key nature of it, even a bit boring at times.

But as a sort of objective procedural of the ugly nature of secret war it was fascinating.

The Grand Hotle Budapest.

we'd never heard of it or knew what to expect, but what an unusual gem of a film. Fantastic cinematography, great script, amazing cast, wonderful humour throughout. Give it a go!!

Took 4 year old to the cinema to watch it a couple of weeks ago and she loved it

She laughed at the funny bits, clung to me for the scary bits, cheered at the action bits and shed a few tears in the sad bits

Perfect

And of course now every time we agree on something we have to fistbump (with the noises)

    • Sorry but I think it's best if people just check things for themselves when they buy things. In three shops/restaurants (from some years back) I just avoid the places concerned, as in all three  cases I was pretty sure it wasn't a genuine mistake, and in one place  it happened more than once and usually late at night.
    • Sorry Sue - me again. This has been on my mind all day, it's a big bug bear of mine. If you don't mind - please can you private message me some of these shops so I can cross reference / add to my AVOID list.  Thanks in advance. Let's make sure this doesn't happen this Christmas, particularly as we head into sales season. Even more problematic in my experience.
    • Pity you didn't quote what you are referring to, Mal. I didn't see the previous post, and my mind is boggling 😮
    • The Cherry Tree was absolutely excellent for a while when a youngish couple ran it and brought in a really good chef. It was them who renamed it The Cherry Tree. They were really turning it around. The chef did fantastic Scotch eggs, and one of the best roasts I've ever had. If memory serves the then owner,  for some reason known only to himself, took a dislike to them and what they were doing and sacked them all. And yes we weren't expecting a top class  meal last Christmas, and we left it too late to book anywhere else, but we weren't expecting it for a hundred pounds EACH to be quite as terrible as it was. Stupid us. Not sure why you are confused by my post, Jazzer? Did I misremember? Now it's got even more confusing because my posts have been merged and your confused emoji is shown at the bottom of the second one instead of the first 🤣
