spanglysteve
I appreciate the bus is cheaper, but in terms of directness, its muck quicker to goto Peckham Rye on the bus, then train to London Bridge then jump over to platform 5 for train to Leicester Square. I can easily get to work in 45 mins from St aidens Rd taking that route. When I used to work in Whitehall I tried the 12 once, it took almost 80 mins to get into work that day...never again did I try!the-e-dealer Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> Bus is a lot cheaper. pez
12 bus is now way better for commuting both to and from Regent St (I get on at Peckham Rye). Because both the 12 and 453 have been replaced, the roads are less congested by the bendy buses so traffic seems to be moving more freely. Also, the top deck is nowhere near as full as bendy bus used to be and touch wood I've got a seat on every occasion since they came in. Plus, there are now way less dodgy types getting on for a free ride. I can't really see any reason to complain about the swap over. Sue
Surely you don't need to get a train to Lewisham to go to Charing Cross? You can go from ED to London Bridge then get a train from there to Charing Cross, short walk to platform 5/6 and a very frequent service. Sue
the-e-dealer Wrote:-------------------------------------------------------> Hate the change at London Bridge but yes you can> do that.xxxxxThe train from ED stops right next to the bridge at London Bridge - all you do is walk a short distance over the bridge to Platform 5/6.Takes less than a minute! Why would you need to go via Lewisham? Sounds bonkers to me :)) Link to comment https://www.eastdulwichforum.co.uk/topic/20288-bus-route-12/page/4/#findComment-500238 Share on other sites
spongebob
I haven't used a bus in years but if the soap dodging work shy scum bags have been turfed off for actually having to pay for their travel I may well give it a go... Medley
Inspired, I tried doing this this very morning. Worked a treat. Made me remember the palmy days of trains from Honor Oak Park to Charing X direct - ended in 2009 I think. ibilly99
Plus the new buses have some quick start technology so the engine shuts down when idle and starts off on electric till the engine cuts in. Cool. Yeah no low life's on the buses now - so they'll be milling around looking for houses to burgle no doubt. rebwec01
I get the 12 everyday to and from work, so in both rush-hours (and literally from start of route to end!)Takes around 1hr 15mins minutes(sometimes less depending on traffic at Whitehall/Trafalgar Square) but I just read my book so suits me. As I get on at the starting point of each journey, I now always get a seat upstairs, and am generally sitting alone (on my 2 seats) until Camberwell (fills up quicker coming back). Getting on at Oxford Circus is no longer a crush to get on a grab a seat either. I much prefer it, and have noticed they come alot more frequently. (tu) from me! Bic Basher
I rode my first hybrid 12 today up to Peckham. Had a bit of a shock when it becomes electric powered and the diesel engine cuts out at the bus stops! computedshorty
Think how long it would have taken on this number 12 Bus.The Kings Arms, Peckham Rye. Three buses can be seen in the picture. The one in the side street is run by National, whilst the one parked at the offside kerb is General's route 12, showing Turnham Green on the rear destination board. The route was Turnham Green and Peckham Rye, via Shepherds Bush - Marble Arch - Oxford Circus - Charing Cross - Westminster Bridge - and Camberwell Green. The 12 still runs a large section of this route to this day.The old Kings Arms prior to rebuilding after the war. To the right of the no 12 bus can be seen the part of the Rye where the wartine underground Air Raid Shelters were dug into the grassed area.Anyone here remember usung them? James Barber
No.12 bus route is a target for fare evasion issues with TfL - I asked after seeing people duck onto the new buses through the rear doors.
