Plenty of other banks around than Barclays.....

Changing banks is really easy these days. You just tell the other bank your existing account details, and they do absolutely everything for you including moving direct debits and moving over any money paid into your old account after you have switched.

Alternatively, it is perfectly possible to have several bank accounts if you are determined to hold onto your Barclays one.

Though given the sad story of what is happening in East Dulwich, I don't know why anybody would, really! Though having said that, I hold onto a bank account I have had for decades mainly because I imagine that it's good for my credit rating ...... but I do have several others because of things like earning interest on current accounts, which my main bank account doesn't offer.

Why would they refuse? Surely banks don't ban you because you already have another bank account? There must have been other reasons!

Some banks do require you to deposit a certain amount per month, but you can always transfer it back to where it came from the next day (or even the same day, provided it's gone in OK!)

Also some banks do require you to have a certain amount of direct debits with them, but you can always set up something with a charity for a couple of quid a month if you don't have anything suitable to swap over from another bank.

I've got several bank accounts and never had any problems.

Though I have to say, I closed my Lloyds bank account years ago because I wasn't happy with them (can't remember why now).

ETA: These days I move accounts about depending on what banks are paying new customers to move to them. You don't have to stay there longer than the time specified to qualify for the "free" money :))

With online banking, my regular transfer of money between accounts is done at home in less than 2 minutes.

However, I've never had a bank account in ED. I'm with the Natwest in Peckham, but the last time I was there was to order a bank card a couple of years ago and it was at least 5 years ago since I last deposited a cheque!

All conversations will be confidential and used only to inform the research.
